but on the outside in.. it really does look strange..

how are you going to extend a coach after just his second year.. yes he got 10 wins.. but he also got a 3rd place finish in the conference and didn't even sniff a NY6 bowl game..

Like Herman got an extension after reaching an NY6 game and winning it.. and it was a huge mistake.. many of us were like WTF.. he still has 3 more seasons to go..

Lost two games by an average of 4 points in his second year after barely becoming bowl eligible.

Many others have received more for less.

And he almost beat Texas last year. What?! They did what? They did? I stand corrected. They beat Texas' ass; the same Texas that everybody keeps bragging about. Maybe Venables did a good job after all. Plus the recruiting is fantastic. This year will be harder but every OU fan on the planet is waiting until 2025 when everything finally gets put back together again.

He’s an OK guy and recruiting has been great. He was the only choice without making wholesale changes that would have involved identity loss. It’s all in on Venables to overcome Stoops horrible decision to trust a scumbag like Riley.

i'm not disputing none of that.. But it does bring this back to the original question.. if it's going well what's the rush for extending him? Was he going to get poached? Or was this really about recruiting.. needing to have assurances to pass along for the recruits?

Yes if I was an Oklahoma fan I would be extremely concerned you had to extend a lame-duck coach

No one (besides Texas fans) wants to see the Sooners move to the SEC and become some middle of the pack program but it feels like we are on that path and there are no brakes
