Very well made onion rings beat out fries, but they are rare. Most places o-rings suck ass.

Tator tots beat both.

Paired with a steak? Have to go with baked potatoes.

BBQ? Tater salad is the answer.
 
When onion rings are an option I will take even half good onion rings over great French fries.

But that might just be that I rarely see onion rings. If they were as available as fries I might pick fries more often.

If that makes any sense....

Fries. Onions are disgusting in any form.
 
I like both and we usually get both if we go out for burgers, but if I had to pick, I'd go with fries.

Onions and I don't get along. If they are cooked down in a stew then they are fine, but the closer to raw they are the more they tear up my stomach. I'm female en sech apparently.
 
Fried cheese or curds for the win, FYI. Drizzle em in some caramel sauce and roll me off to fat camp.

I don't know about the caramel sauce, but fried cheese curds are delicious
