Your right. The 2009 extension was before a 10-win season where they finished Top 10.
November 23, 2004 - contract extension through June 2012 - Iowa went 10-2 and finished 8th in both polls. They were 9-2 and ranked 11th and headed to Capitol One Bowl vs LSU (Nick Saban's last game as LSU's coach). Bowl game to watch if you are not LSU fan. Iowa had finished Top 10 for the 3rd straight season with a 31-7 record during that span.
February 12, 2009 - contract extension through 2015 season - Iowa went 9-4 and finished 20th that season. It seems he got the extension because he was getting NFL offers and Iowa wanted to secure him.
September 2, 2010 - contract extension through 2020 season - Iowa went 11-2 and finish 7th in both polls after dominating Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
September 6, 2016 - contract extension through 2026 season - Iowa went 12-0 during regular season (12-2 overall) and finished 9th in AP Poll and 10th in Coaches Poll. Also, before the 2015 season, Iowa had record low season ticket sales (link) as they wanted to see Iowa do better.

The Gator Bowl doesn't draw as well as it once did. However, to be fair, it was played in a downpour that day! I had Club Level seats and sat inside watching on TV until one of the teams entered the Red Zone. lol.

I think Iowa has a good women's field hockey team. Your team can have ugly cheerleaders and I still would understand why you would rather watch them instead of the actual football game.
We ain’t Nebraska. We got both hot cheerleaders and entertaining football for 3/4th of the season.
