Great Drummers

I won't post a video, but Paul Wertico, Peter Erskine, and Alex Acuna are up there with the creme de la creme of contemporary drummers.

Paul Wertico was easily the best Pat Metheny Group drummer. Antonio Sanchez is waaaaay too "busy."

I've had the Peter Erskine As It Was ECM release on repeat for weeks now. Can't stop listening!

Michael Shrieve 3'50" mark

Carl Palmer - preferred to be called a Percussionist.

It's that fine line. If the drums are too pedestrian, it starts sounding too much like smooth jazz; too busy and then the drums start sounding too much like the dominant feature.

I gotta check out PE - As It Was.

I don't want to be distracted by drums. I watch old live videos of PMG with Paul Wertico and that guy was just the perfect balance. I don't need to be constantly reminded what a talented drummer Antonio Sanchez is every fukkin measure. "Dude, stop it!"

Pat Metheny's music was, without even the shadow of a doubt, at its pinnacle when it was him and Lyle Mays composing 90% of it and then Steve Rodby in on the other 10%. Then he started surrounding himself with these world-class musicians, and I totally get that, but the music suffered.

I gotta check out PE - As It Was.
That album is now in my top 20 all-time ECM releases.

Jeremy Gara.

Might not be anywhere at the best of all time, but is regarded as one of the top tier of today. I'd put him up against purdy dayum near anyone, these days.

Having grown up takin drum lessons for five yrs and playing alot after that, I can appreciate the difficulty of much of the stuff he manages to bang out. This is one of my faves - the quick shifting beats & the tempo just really astounds me and I know his arms were 'singin' & he was spent at the end of this song.

Been down many drum cover rabbit holes watchin 'amateurs' over the years.

Dunno why, but this guy has always impressed the hell outta me.

Not the best quality, but I always liked Mitch Mitchell.
