Jon Gruden Interested In Returning To Coaching......With An Unexpected Twist

Jon Gruden wants to return to coaching, but not where fans might expect.

Gruden is more than open to a fresh start in a college town with a college team.

"Yeah, I'm interested in coaching. My dad was a college coach, I was a college coach at Pitt, my wife was a cheerleader at Tennessee when I met her. Hell yeah, I'm interested in coaching. I know I can help a team, I know I can help young players get better, and I know I can hire a good staff, and that's the only thing I can guarantee. But yeah, I'm very interested in coaching at any level, period," Gruden said when talking about potentially taking a college job.

He could have made this statement at any point since being outed with the Raiders and I'm pretty sure he wasn't interested in Tenn when it came open but the timing of this makes me think he wants the Florida job because we all know it is coming open and he could take it right now.
 
Gruden had 6 years left on his contract when he stepped down in 2021, and a confidential settlement was reached to buyout the remaining years/money. I bet he had some sort of non-compete in there for some amount of time, I could see that being 3 years and so now he is ready to get back after it.

If he was coaching in college it wouldn’t have been a conflict.

I’m thinking he wanted back in the NFL and that ain’t going to happen so he is now open to college.

Yeah that might be true too, but what I meant by no compete would be offsets so that anything he makes coaching would offset what the Raiders owe.
 
The other option is he is putting his name out there for the soon to be Colorado opening.

That would be a nightmare job.

I'm thinking it's Florida because it is about to be open and if the powers that be can land Gruden it would happen sooner rather than later. Who else are they going to get? The candidate pool is very shallow, locked up or you are taking a risk.

haha, nah his boys plus Hunter won't go anywhere until next spring. Deion will be pulling a Schloss and saying he isn't going anywhere right up to the second he goes somewhere else.

Wouldn't the fact that it would be at the college level, a totally different industry, nullify that no compete?

For someone like Gruden, completely agree. But I think someone that is young and wants to make a name for himself, CO is going to be a great job. They will have a couple of years of being in the news, sympathy for Deion lying and burning the school, and basically enough opening that anyone they offer could come in and start year 1. It will be a great job, plus its in the Big12 so not like world beating competition.

No clue how those offset contracts are written, so maybe. or maybe they sweeten the deal by saying it is "all football related jobs" in exchange for another $10m they owe him.

Or there might not have been any contract and he was just enjoying fat paychecks for no work but now he is bored in retirement and wants that rush of coaching again.
