Harbaugh Looking For NFL Gig

For as long as he is beating OSU and making the playoffs, Michigan fans will swallow whatever Harbaugh is shoveling.

Honestly, he picked up a couple wins against OSU at opportune time and won the B1G twice. I think he sees he's not likely to win a NC, especially considering how he's still struggling mightily on the recruiting trail, so why not leave now?

Sure. I could see him thinking that. But I also think if he was thinking that, he wouldn't have said 3 weeks ago, "I will be back enthusiastically coaching Michigan in 2023"

And as I said -- Saban has a track record of doing that. Harbaugh has been straight up with not only his team, but kid's that he recruits. He was telling kids he was still interested in the NFL. Which is why, when he said less than a month ago, he'd be returning for 2023 -- I take his word for it.

Now if he is offered some enormous sum unheard of in the coaching profession, such as the $20 million being rumored -- then sure -- I can see him going back on his word, but every kid would understand why, as the highest paid coach right now only makes 12.5 million. So if someone offered him 7.5 million more than any coach has ever been paid in a year (and 12 million/yr more than he is being paid at UM) -- I'd be pissed at him if he didn't take it. That is F U money for a head coach and it'd be a long term contract too, so he'd probably get 6-7 years for 120-140 million.

I’m not sure he’s worth $20 M so you’re probably safe.

I’m kind of over him. Appreciate what he’s done & glad he toned down a lot of the silly stuff, but I wouldn’t mind a new chapter. There are a lot of good coaches out there where I don’t think we’d get stuck w another Rich Rod and/or Hoke.

Every MI coach should do what he’s done, regardless of who they are. You’re going to trade some wins w tOSU but we should run the table against everybody else in the reg season. I don’t think doing that is a major accomplishment for Michigan.

Only problem here is if he left it's so late well after the coaching cycle for this year is pretty much over.

So you either get saddled with a 1 year in house interim. Which pretty much screws you for a year of recruiting. Or you have to take a shot at the same type of in house guy as the guy going forward, some fairly unheralded assistant from another school, or poach a smaller school head coach who didn't land a upgraded job in this cycle. All pretty big risks.

If he left, I'd hope they went after a young coordinator rather than try and get some head coach from another team. Hell, give it to Mike Hart.
 
Harbaugh apparently had a conversation with the Panthers owner. Out of the openings, that's probably the one that looks the most appealing. I am leaning towards him leaving based on everything I'm hearing.
 
I don't get Harbaugh's end game though. He doesn't seem like a guy who really NEEDS the NFL money.

Is he just getting frustrated not being able to win a national title at Michigan and thinks it would be better to ride out a few NFL seasons before retiring? He does seem like a guy who gets less and less enthused with the recruiting aspect of the college game as the years roll on.

I figure his agent is just using this to get him a big fat raise, which he probably deserves.

He doesn’t “need” NFL money but he has a major ego and his brother bested him for a Super Bowl and he probably wants one to at least match his brother.
