HooplaNation's 2023 CFB Week 3 Rankings - Discussion Thread

Dude, y’all struggle with Indiana
:hand:

Utah wins PAC 12’s , best conference in CFB so far.
Indiana > Baylor. We won by 3 TDs while Utah barely escaped in the final seconds.

But Utah got by Florida, so...

:pound: No, IU is not better than Baylor and Utah is doing it with backups.

Ohio State has better talent and I expect em to rise as the season develops but at the moment, are where ya are.

MAYBE Washington but Ohio State, Penn State BOTH lose to Utah at their place atm.

Dude Utah needed major luck to beat a Baylor team that lost by 2 scores to fucking Texas State the week before

They aren't beating Ohio State or Penn State in their current form, no matter where the game is played.

Texas State gouged Baylor for 42 points.

Utah was lucky to hit 20.

Utah better hope Rising can play very soon. They got UCLA and Oregon State back to back after Weber State this week. Good chance they drop both of those games with their current offense situation.

I recall a 2002 Ohio State team who barely scored 20 several times... and won the national championship.
Utah has a good defense and is scrappy, 2 P5 opponents, one on the road, 2 victories with a backup QB as well as other players out. I would not count them out playing the Ohio state that we've seen SO FAR... We'll see what they have vs the PAC opponents ect. As for Penn State WVU is not good yet they hung with them for alot of their game in Happy Valley, at night no less. I dont completely trust what I've seen from them TBH.

We'll see more about Ohio State when they go to South Bend

Florida is not good at all and Baylor is horrible with their backup QB

I don't think Ohio State is "great" at all at the moment, they are still much better than Florida and Baylor though.

We probably would lose to Utah right now if Rising was 100% and playing. But we would beat them if they were trotting out those backups.

I don't think a team could ever sniff a national title in this day finishing 70th in total offense (like 2002 Ohio State)

Utah is 114th right now. Like I said they better get Rising back quick because games against UCLA and Oregon State upcoming very likely will be Ls without him.

Yes they are. ALL B1G teams are better than low life PAC or Big 12s.

If we let Kyle lead the offense completely and don't give Devin relevant minutes, OSU beats Utah regardless of their QB. They are highly bereft of offensive talent.

That means they will likely win BOTH games, Nostradumass

Actually, I would say ACC is the best right now. FSU over LSU, UNC over SCar, Miami over TAMU. Those are some good quality wins for a conference in 2 weeks, and that is just vs 1 conference.

That's assuming LSU is anything more than an 8-4 team this year, which I'm not sure you can say they are. Also there's a real chance SCar and A&M don't even go to bowl games. Honestly I think it's too early at this time to say which conference is "best". I'll say I think the Pac-12 is going to be the most interesting to follow though.

There are still some big OOC games left to be played to determine which conference looks to be the best. ND vs. USC, OSU vs. ND, Clemson vs. ND, Kansas State vs. Missouri, Minnesota vs. UNC, Washington vs. MSU, BYU vs. Arkansas, GT vs. Ole Miss, Pitt vs. WVU, and then we have ACC/SEC rivalry week at the end of the year.

I will say, if SC beats ND, I think it's case closed that the P12 is the best conference(assuming UW beats MSU as well). You have two legit title candidates in that regard, and the next best 6 teams are all ranked. It would be great at the top and extremely deep. The ACC probably has the best wins as of now, but they've also taken on a bunch of losses that the P12 hasn't.

I'd go P12 definitely #1. The B1G, SEC, ACC and even Big 12 are kind of jumbled together. Alot will hinge on the OSU/ND and USC/ND games. If OSU loses to ND, the B1G will not have one good win as a conference in non conference(if things play out as projected).

Penn State and michigan not having a marquee OOC game does hurt. Even if OSU beats ND and Minnesota beats UNC (I give MSU 0 shot against Washington), I don't know if I'd say the B1G is for sure the best. The only thing I can say for sure right now is that the SEC is by no means at the top. Outside of Georgia, I'm not sure there is anyone with an actual CFP shot. It's going to be at least a month or so until we can say for sure which conference is at the top IMO, and even then it could change several times throughout the year.

Gun to my head right now, if I had to pick the CFP, I don't think there's any way I'd say you're gonna see 2 schools from any particular conference.

I agree, SEC isn't at the top anymore. You can't suffer those embarrassing losses and still be considered the best. The team's they played were good, but losing by double digits is another thing. If OSU beats ND and Minn beats UNC, I think a case can be made for the B1G. You have elite teams at the top with some nice depth in this instance with Minnesota and Iowa as potentially ranked teams. There are a ton of ACC/B1G games this week. Not a bunch of marquee teams outside Minn and UNC playing, but let's say IU beats UL, while not a great win, it does make the OSU win over IU look better. If one conference does really well this weekend, say a 5-1 weekend, I think that conference will separate as the #2 conference this far. And I expect the ACC to beats the SEC in rivalry week outside of GT beating UGA. So I do think this weekend is important as far as conference pecking order.

As far as a conference getting two teams in, it really hinges on ND IMO. If OSU and USC win, I think there is a good possibility of the B1G and/or P12 getting two teams. But that depends on other teams. If FSU and Texas play like they did against LSU and Bama I can't see them losing. UGA is looking like 13-0, so there might only be one spot available. It will be interesting. If those there go undefeated, what will shake out in the B1G and P12. Honestly, if there are 5 undefeated P5 champs(I know very unlikely) UGA, based on potential resume, SHOULD be the one left out, but we know that's not happening.

This board (and all boards really) spends a lot of time conflating issues.

There is a difference between saying who has been better so far, and which one is most likely to look the most dominant at seasons end.

Both are subjective as it is.

I had no idea there were all these B1G/ACC games. If I had to guess outcomes, I'd go:

Maryland/Virginia
Indiana/Louisville
UNC/Minnesota
Duke/Northwestern
Rutgers/Virginia Tech
Syracuse/Purdue

Even 3-3 split, so probably not telling much. If Minnesota or (somehow) Northwestern were to pull off upsets, that'd be saying something. I'm with you on the ACC beating out the SEC in most of their matchups too. ND is absolutely the catalyst for the B1G/PAC getting two teams, too. I cannot wait to see the game in a couple of weekends. Thankfully we're going to get somewhat of a passing test against WKU before facing Hartman, because we're going to need to be 100% on that game. UGA has earned the benefit of the doubt, and I will say if Ole Miss and Tennessee keep it up, they'll have to finish the year facing ranked teams 3 of their final 4 weeks, so that'll be impressive. If there are 5 unbeatens, my money is on Texas being left out.
