Man, wow. Ranking Oregon, Washington, and UCLA. Oregon beats UCLA, UCLA beats Washington, Washington beats Oregon. Do you go by bad losses? Washington lost to Arizona State and UCLA lost to Arizona. Season will play out, but damn. Kinda tough.

It also seems like this time of year, it is very hard to rank 18-25 or something like that because there are always a couple of spots that I am just trying to plug a team into it.

PAC 12 is the best conference top to bottom so such as you describe is expected.

Even though there are still four undefeated teams and several one loss teams to date, I'd go a little further than you. I'd say there isn't enough evidence to show a whole lot of separation between 2-25 yet. Georgia is the only team that has shown us a lot "when they had to". At least imo.

Who have Ohio State, Michigan and TCU played to date that showed us they are "top notch"? On a neutral field, I'm not convinced they would whoop up on 5-25. Ohio State and Michigan haven't had much competition. (I know, I know, I'll get some "Penn State" is good blowback.) People like to point out TCU's wins over X number of ranked opponents "at the time". But that's hollow now. Kansas, K-State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas have 17 Big 12 losses collectively! (granted 5 of those 17 are to TCU but you get the point.) Hell, I think teams like Ole Miss, Utah and North Carolina would provide good games against teams ranked 2-4.

Things like this is why I'm for an expanded playoff. I'd like to see 5-12 play it out on the field and then throw 1-4 in there with 'em. I think it would be great to watch. Yeah, there will be a few lopsided games. But I'm willing to accept some thorns with the roses.

Speaking of roses, SCREW THE ROSE BOWL and their 2:00 pm on New Year's Day Sacred Cow.

Possibly. I give undefeateds benefit of the doubt. 1-5 seems to be pretty stable in most polls with Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, TCU, and Tennessee. USC is now the favorite for #6 but they may not be that great. LSU at #7 based off them winning the SEC West.

I think once you get past top 5 there is a gap. You may also be right that there is a gap after Georgia since Georgia has been the only complete team this year (Michigan may have an argument but I think they don't get as much love because we haven't seem them throw down field a lot).

Alabama is an interesting team IMO. They are still a "good" team but definitely not a playoff contender. They got major issues. I also think Oregon may fit that bill as well despite all the trolling on here. Oregon is probably the best Pac12 team. I haven't been that impressed with UCLA or USC when I have watched them. USC is a "good" team like Alabama but probably not going to win out.

TCU is the one exception. Everyone hates on them for good reason because they win ugly but they keep winning. They look a lot like Clemson but they haven't collapsed yet.

I guess in my rant, I don't rank based on how good I think a team is but rather how well they have performed. I think they are good teams that underperform and don't win games sometimes. Arkansas, for example, is a team that is probably a lot better than their record but have had a bad season. Wake Forest is another example.

If I ranked a top ten based on how good I think a team is, it would be the following:

1. Georgia
2. Ohio State
3. Michigan
4. Tennessee
5. Alabama (yes, I think Alabama is actually better than LSU)
6. Oregon
7. Clemson
8. TCU (I do think TCU is a legit top ten team but not top 5. However, I am going to rank them their because they are unbeaten)
9. LSU
10. USC

However, I don't rank like I do above because personal bias is in it. TCU deserves to be #4 even though no one has confidence in them.

My problem with Michigan is they haven't really played an opponent that has shown much. We hammer teams from other conferences about such schedules but they get a pass because of "B1G"? That don't fly with me.

Good point with Bama other teams you mention similar to them. I'd throw in Notre Dame, Ole Miss, etc. While not current "playoff contenders", they would be in a 12 team format and I'd take some of those types to beat the top four...especially on a neutral field. (I think the recommendation of home field for the top four is a great incentive to play "to the end".) Again, JMO.

I'd like 6-10's chances against 1-4 on neutral fields.

I will admit, I thought about ranking Iowa at #25, just to see if anyone reacts to it. But I might think Iowa deserves it if they finish regular season 8-4, given how other 3-loss teams and possibly 2-loss teams finish.

I can overlook Iowa having record-breaking bad offense for a bowl eligible team, or that they lost to Ohio State and Michigan. Even though Illinois is doing good, I think Iowa is better. The ISU loss hurts. That will be the factor a lot of people keep Iowa out of their Top 25.

I ranked Florida so I can feel you. I think I also kept Illinois ranked. Both probably don't belong in polls but I couldn't find a good substitute. Oklahoma State was another one that I ranked and probably doesn't deserve it.

The other thing is, and it is kinda funny. If LSU loses one more regular season game, do we rank Florida State ahead of them because they both have 3 losses and FSU beat LSU. I know LSU has way better wins. Honestly, just kidding, but some will wonder.

FSU isn't that far off from LSU. I think they are 18th or so. I mean that seems far but it really isn't with a loss because LSU will drop in the upper teens and FSU is likely to climb so it definitely could happen.

That's how I differentiated them since I couldn't use head to head.

Been thinking about something.

Fill in the blank in this statement in about 4 seconds and be honest with yourself and everyone else here:

“Alabama would finish ________ in the BIG this year.”

But OD says Oregon should be no lower than 12th!
"OD" gonna "OD"...

Would be hilarious if they ended up 13th (or lower) as we'd probably get an additional "rant thread" from him... :heh:

Sponsored by Applebees of course. :headbanger:

They are 13th in my poll. LOL. Lord help us if the Ducks are ranked in top 10. It will be an "Ha, I told you so" thread.

I will be the first to say -- Michigan hasn't played much of schedule, but what they have done is..........destroyed every team they played. The two "closest" games they've played look much closer than they were.

UM was up 14 on Maryland in the last minute and both teams had backups in -- they ended up scoring at the last second to make it look much closer.

Next closest game was Iowa. UM was up 27-7 with 2 minutes to go, emptied the bench and Iowa scored in the final minute.

Every other game, they have won by in between 21 and 59 points. So they have had some games where it took them a quarter or two to get going, but they have dominated 2nd halves. The last 4 games against Penn State, Michigan State, Rutgers and Nebraska -- Michigan has outscored them 117-3 in the 2nd half. That's absurd.
