How offensive is it to ask someone's gender?

Since you've said it's not a work situation, just politely ask them what their preferred pronouns are. I would hope they would appreciate you making the effort to know how they would like to be addressed. They're probably surrounded by people who don't know and are afraid to ask.

Her public signals(the way she dresses) say treat her and refer to her as a woman. If you are wrong, you will be corrected. No issue.

The only real answer is to get drunk and play “Truth or Dare”. If they select “truth”, just ask. If they select “dare” have them drop their underwear and get a peek for yourself.

Like most of life’s problems, this is an issue best solved with alcohol.
