Decided to put this in the CFB forum since football is one of the driving forces. Ex: He (Huggins) said he worries about college basketball maintaining a seat at the table as the collegiate structure continues to change and football powers gain more control over what happens next. "We have no power because we don't generate the same kind of TV income that football does," Huggins said. "But we don't try to."

Major Conferences Should Ditch NCAA Tournament

this should in the CBB forum, b/c his comments will have zero impact on college football. Huggins and other basketball coaches can bitch all they want, but they will never have a fraction of the influence that football coaches have.

on the other hand, a major college basketball coach is advocating on excluding low and mid majors from the NCAA tournament. That is the real story here. tbh, this board (and euro hoop) has always had an issue with putting cbb political threads on the cfb board.

Not sure what he's talking about
The NCAA Tournament is the best thing ever.

Basketball in general might generate more viewership if they put a better product on the floor.
The NBA 1 and done has done terrible things to the sport, and for what exactly.

either take the tournament down to 32 games for a more meaningful season....or reap the riches of what you have now which is in the top 3 of any sports viewership

It doesn't generate much for the schools. The NCAA gets those profits.... That's what funds the NCAA for the year.

He's saying they should play in an alternate "March madness" and keep the money for themselves

I like the tournament set up, I think it would be terrible to move away from it. However, Dixon talked about creating a tournament separate from the NCAA so the schools can keep a bigger share of the revenue. I think that will likely happen

I agree with that. I just hope the tournament format doesn’t change

Ok, that makes sense.

While David Stern was the NBA commissioner when the one and done rule came into effect, Adam Silver has made it pretty clear that he isn't a fan of teenagers playing in the NBA. The current system works for the NBA, they don't care about the perceived negative effect it has produced for college basketball. The NCAA has very little to do with it.

Huggins should be happier, tbh. NCAA no longer gives a shit if your player graduation rate is near 0%

Bingo and we are headed in that direction. I won’t bore anyone with a lengthy recommendation of how this could be done but I estimate the P5 schools could take over March Madness and generate at least 1.5 billion to 2 billion in revenue to be shared among the schools. You would need to include a couple of Basketball heavy conferences in the mix to not lose the current excitement but you don’t have make the field as wide open as it is now. It will suck for the Loyola’s of the world but thems the breaks.

I think they could probably even just invite other schools if they want to (the small schools/upsets are part of the appeal... It would generate more interest), and include them in the payout. Maybe make it a sliding scale based on seeding or number of teams present in the tournament

That's the point to me. The NCAA gets zero money from FBS football. Schools keep it all. (But some is shared to appease the G5 isn't it?) Why not basketball? CBP similar to the CFP.

Very doubtful a CBP would generate anywhere near the revenue the CFP does. How much would a CBP generate in comparison to what schools conferences are paid in the current March Madness? IIRC a lot depends on how far teams advance.

Well then move the damn thing to the CBB forum since your opinion is the ultimate correct one. You sure you aren't my know it all brother-in-law?

Interesting read but a more accurate Title should read "Major conferences should ditch NCAA". Higgins is just saying that it could be the major conferences that gets the big payday from the tournament instead of the NCAA which just signed an 8.8 billion dollar TV contract til 2032

no, i'm MUCH better than him and don't you forget it

and this thread legitimately has 0% to do with college football. lets start putting all the NFL game threads on this board while we're at it

The NCAA tournament generates about $850 million. The CFB playoff makes about $450 million.

Overall CFB makes more, but basketball makes more from their tournament
