I think they could probably even just invite other schools if they want to (the small schools/upsets are part of the appeal... It would generate more interest), and include them in the payout. Maybe make it a sliding scale based on seeding or number of teams present in the tournament

Yep. Make an invitational, and take a few schools that win their conference basketball tourneys

The NCAA tournament generates about $850 million. The CFB playoff makes about $450 million.

Overall CFB makes more, but basketball makes more from their tournament

I think nearly all (or all) of it goes to the NCAA

Yes.... But they would incur more costs to set up and run the tournament (has to be expensive) I'd bet the first few years wouldn't be too profitable. They would make money, but it wouldn't be $850 million

That would require something similar to the CFP. Next question is do they want to do that for all sports? College World Series? Volleyball? Tennis? Golf? etc.

Wonder how much of that $850 million is eaten up by running those? I'm guessing it also pays for everything FCS, Div III etc have.

It does. Those other tournaments don't make money. The NCAA is a non profit organization (I believe), and the tournament is nearly all of their revenue for the year

Let’s put it this way you are correct and multiple sports and multiple divisions are going to have a serious problem on their hands.

Fact is the NCAA is going to go away because it’s no joke that a replacement tournament is worth 1.5 to 2 billion (before expenses) as it’s under valued right now.

If the P5 group grabs that revenue (which they will) the NCAA will have zero operating revenue and therefore will not be able to afford to exist.

It isn’t a question of will this happen it is a question of when and I’m betting sooner rather than later.
