Don't know about this but guessing COVID years had something to do with it.

Last year was decent for us. But when we've had those real bad teams, you don't want many players back. You want some new ones! Hoping the portal will help us.

I seem to recall a player from Utah was going to have 7 but "left early" for the draft. Everyone got a covid year and players that received medical exemptions could stack up some years
 
Avery Davis was about to enter his 6th year at ND when he tore his other ACL (tore one last year that ended his season). He could theoretically request another year especially since the Covid season was basically like a free year of eligibility.

He’s hanging them up though.
