I think I’m losing interest in college football at a rapid rate

There was a time when Saturdays in the Fall were nothing but football from noon until Pac after dark ended.

This year, not counting mid week MACtion and Funbelt games, you could probably count the number of games I watched that UGA wasn’t playing in on one hand.

And even then, UGA is playoff bound, and me, my gf,, a couple buddies and their wives are all flying into Vegas with the intent of going to LA for the NCG, and I’m excited for Vegas, but I’m having a hard time getting excited for the game. Might just because it’s in LA and I have no interest at all in LA.

I’ll always follow UGA, but the sport as a whole just doesn’t really do it for any more. This is the first year ever that I’ve watched more NFL than college football.

I blame the mega conferences
 
I blame the TV scheduling. Not that long ago there were really great matchups throughout the day on Saturday. There was usually 1-2 good games at noon ET, 1-2 good games at 3:30 ET and then a few good games in primetime at 8pm ET. Now it seems like that's all fucked up, good games are pushed to the primetime slot accross networks, there might be 1 good game at noon and then nothing in the middle.
The 3:30 slot used to be a huge timeslot for good games. I think Michigan had 1 single game there this year and like 4-5 in the 8pm slot.

UGA had zero home games at night, and a bunch of 3:30 kickoffs
 
My interest is waning but it has more to do with the portal and NIL. I'm not giving up on the sport but when you have players putting themselves on the auction block and 10 players a year going into the portal then recruiting has become a shit show.

I think the portal can be fixed by setting distinct windows and the number of times a player can transfer (there is a former Auburn QB that is about to transfer for the 4th time and that is ridiculous).

NIL is only going to be fixed when we start putting these kids under contract paying them a salary and locking them down more. Once you do that then the NIL money won't be as much of a factor. I hate to say it but the only reason to "stabilize" college football is to make it a semi-pro league at this point.

I'm going to be interested if any of these players get nailed for tax evasion because we all know there are going to be plenty that try not to claim the NIL money and when the 1099s come it is going to be a shocker and the money will be spent.

That's because you were the number 1 team all season so you got the game-of-the-week kick-off spot. That's a weird thing to complain about.

No one wants to up against the SEC in the 3:30 slot. That is why you guys play all the big games at noon when the SEC has scrub games on.

This had made liking players or having a favorite player a bit harder. Kids are leaving and bouncing around so often now that you really have no idea what your team will look like next season. You get a good kid in recruiting, he sits one year and then bounces the next. Honestly, I'm starting to think the transfer portal is the new "Recruiting ranking". How long until one of these sites ranks your recruiting class AND ranks your transfer portal class (if that already doesn't exist)? The transfer kids seem even more important now than ever because you can expect major departures from kids who lost spots almost every single year.

I guess. But it's really hurting the overall experience. On away games I used to have the TV going, my laptop going and an ipad going showing all the games on throughout the day. Now you'd be lucky to have 1 good game on in each time block until the 8pm games kick off.
 
It's the annual, unrestricted free agency & selfish opt outs during bowl season that is killing it for me.

The opt outs in bowls will probably be solved with the 12 team playoff (as much as I hate the 12 team playoff). At least they'll be multiple meaningful bowls again; which died once we left the BCS and the "BCS bowls".

Is there any benefit to the player?

What do you say to them when they get hurt and their draft stock falls and they lose millions?

You gonna cover that lost income for them?

It happened to me the day they approved stipends and allowed them sponsors. People used to get put in jail for paying college kids or parents to attend specific schools. Now that's the game. And that where the game is won. So natty's now mean, who can pay the most.

If I'm going to watch paid players...with some making more than most of us who have worked in our professions for years, I expect quality football.

That doesn’t bother me. It’s still new and will get worked out, but I’d rather it be the way it is now than back when AJ Green was suspended 4 games for selling his own jersey or Todd Gurley getting suspended for selling his own autograph.

There’s got to be a happy medium in there somewhere

There is some truth to this I'm sure but the B1G has always been obsessed with noon games as far back as I can remember. Way before these TV contracts became so important. Not to mention, Ohio State-Michigan is almost always played at noon and that game doesn't really have to worry about when it's scheduled to get viewers
