It is Mid-October and there are over 10 teams still in serious contention for the Title

It's funny you say this, but when we advocate for 12 teams because "who really knows" we get "it's a money grab" and "there will be a bunch of blowouts" and "these are participation trophies." It can't be both ways ... either history, reputation, perception, popularity, beauty come into play - they shouldn't - or we should welcome a 12 team CFP so that it can be decided on the field. Thankfully, rational minds are in control - hard to say about the NCAA - but on this one they are doing a great job.
Allowing 12 teams to decide a national championship via a playoff? That’s heresy.

I personally think that if Tennessee loses to Georgia, they are out. Alabama with a single loss will get in over Tennessee if they win the SEC. If Alabama isn't in the picture, the loser of the Michigan-Ohio State likely gets in over Tennessee.
Not when the committee throws SOS in. Ohio State and Michigan may get screwed when they do that because of their conference mates. But Michigan didn’t help themselves with their OOC. And Notre Dame not being up to par doesn’t help Ohio State to offset their conference SOS

I think we can perhaps get in over Michigan but Ohio State will be tough because they are "Ohio State" and the "Eye Test". Then again, we are the media darlings right now after that game with Alabama. I mean if one of them gets destroyed and Tennessee barely loses to Georgia, I could see it happening. I am just not confident in Tennessee's chances if they don't beat Georgia.

I mean right now Hendon Hooker is still behind CJ Stroud in Heisman Race even though CJ Stroud hasn't played against any P5 team over .500 yet. Don't underestimate the love the B1G gets from the media.

Only Ohio State, Michigan & to a extent Penn State

True. I mean SEC gets a lot of love too but it is only certain programs.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but I think a one loss Ohio State that loses to Michigan definitely has potential to get into playoffs over an 11-1 Tennessee team that lost to Georgia.

IDK about that. They start loving a Ole Miss, Miss State or Kentucky team when they are actually winning.

Even if Illinois or some usual scrub in the B1G is winning, they could care less.

I have seen the shift and I agree that Illinois should be higher. Kentucky got a lot of love for win @ Florida at the right time because Florida was coming off that win over Utah. I don't understand Miss State. People give them a lot of love in here as well. I did buy them after that win over Arkansas but they seem so up and down.

Ole Miss is ranked properly. They are unbeaten but haven't played any one good so they are in the lower part of top 10 with other teams in similar spots.

You want to see B1G love from back in the day, check this out. Michigan was 8-4 and ranked 12. In the 1990s and early 2000s, certain B1G teams would get ranked even with bad records. Throughout CFB history, B1G has gotten far more love than any of the other leagues. Right now, Big12 probably gets the weakest love from the media.

I will believe it when I see it. We caught Alabama in a perfect storm. We are probably overrated a little right now

I guess i should say they (the media) would NEVER be advocating that Illinois get into the playoff with 1 loss. Hell theyd probably be trying to justify keeping them out if they went undefeated.

Ole Miss/Miss State/Kentucky they sure would if it came down to it. Hypothetically.

You may be right. Keep in mind the Big East and the SEC are the only Power league in modern history to have undefeated teams left out of the title (2004 Auburn).

Illinois isn't a sexy name. However, if they win @ Michigan and then get Ohio State in B1G Championship and beat them, I think they could get a playoff spot. The thing is, Illinois would have to win the B1G to get in.

You know what, I left Illinois off my darkhorse list in the OP. That is a feasible scenario. Illinois isn't going to have less than 1 losses without winning the B1G.

Also keep in mind Texas A&M got left out in 2020 and they had argument for being in.

Yeah, Illinois with one loss would be viewed like Baylor and TCU were in 2014. But so would Miss State and Kentucky if there were other “marquee” names available.

Back to Florida.

How high they jumped after beating Utah is only a treatment a SEC team would get. They went from unranked to like #12 I think

This set the tone for Kentucky and then Ole Miss to get propped up off of beating Kentucky. Who got propped up off of beating a now clearly overranked Florida team.

YES Utah was ranked fairly high. But it's also Utah, they are a type of team that tends to lose a road game like that. And Florida probably got lucky to win that game, at home, its not like they blew them out.

This is how they create the yearly "SEC IS A GAUNTLET EVERY WEEK IS MUCH TOUGHER THAN ANY OTHER CONFERENCE!!!" narrative.

Notre dame is about the only team there that woulda gotten in over A&M there in 2020. Notre Dame is too big of a name and following, even if they constantly get destroyed in those types of big games.

If it were like a Syracuse or NC State instead in ND's position A&M woulda got the nod.

I would agree with you if you didn't have a league with teams losing to G5 at home. I don't have time, but I could post a listing of OOC games the B1G has lost or barely won over G5 and FCS teams. It is bad. That is why B1G isn't getting love this year, the OOC performance.

If you took OOC performance, the B1G might be the worse of the Power 5 leagues. I would be curious to see a full breakdown.

If any team is not getting any love and is under ranked, it is probably UCLA who really should be in top 5-6.

UCLA's OOC schedule isnt doing them any favors

Bowling Green, Alabama State and South Alabama (which they nearly lost)

That Washington W is looking less impressive as time goes on, considering Washington got beat by a awful Arizona State team.

The Utah win is nice but how good really is Utah? They seem pretty bi-polar. Got beat by a mediocre Florida team, got beat pretty easily by UCLA and then happened to beat USC.

If an undefeated UCLA PAC CHAMP doesn’t get into the CFP for a one-loss non-champ, there should be riots.

There should be riots if that same ucla team gets left out for a one-loss Bama champ.

I am laughing at the talk about UCLA. Completely a moot point considering they lose to Oregon on Saturday.

Yes the B1G struggled in OOC.

More to the point about the media love fest with the SEC

Florida gets lucky to beat a god awful South Florida team, nothing much is said about it at all. Heck Florida only dropped 2 spots in the poll from 18-20. This was the week after they showed they really weren't so good against Kentucky.

SEC teams seem to get passes from the media on these types of games. A B1G team probably falls out of the top 25 in that position.

Some media member tweeted out the possibility of 4 SEC teams getting into the playoffs and I hope that doesn't get serious consideration. But the outcome of say...

Georgia beats Tennessee....Tennessee wins out.
Alabama with 1 loss beats unbeaten UGA in the SEC champ game
Ole Miss only loss is to Alabama

1 loss Georgia
1 loss Alabama
1 loss Tennessee
1 loss Ole Miss

Lord help us
