THR shared the big news that James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been selected to be the co-chairs and co-CEOS of the newly-formed division DC Studios. This means that Gunn and Safran will oversee DC’s film, TV and animation efforts, with Gunn focusing on the creative side of things and Safran focusing on the business and production work. The men will report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and will work closely with Warner executives Michael de Luca and Pamela Abdy. Gunn’s deal specifically runs for four years, and he’ll work exclusively for DC during that time.


James Gunn confirmed his promotion on Twitter, saying that he’s “so pleased to be here.” This news follows after former DC Films boss Walter Hamada exited Warner Bros. Pictures last week. Gunn elaborated on this major DC move in an official statement with Peter Safran, saying:

The decision to postpone the sequel likely comes as a result of the recent appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOS of DC Studios. Their appointment has affected the status of numerous other DC projects, with some being put on hold or even canceled, such as Batgirl and The Wonder Twins. There had been some concern that The Batman 2 would be put on the chopping block as well, but thankfully the sequel is safe from dismissal, as it has been confirmed that Matt Reeves is currently writing the script alongside Mattson Tomlin.

Matt Reeves recently signed a deal with DC Studios, and is planning on creating a separate universe for his future projects, referred to as “The Batverse”. This will allow for more Batman films and spinoffs to operate independently of the cinematic universe that Gunn and Safran plan on forming. In an interview with The Cyber Nerds, Reeves explained what he hopes for the future of Batman:

Yeah no shit, look at my post after where I found out for sure that Batman was staying separate.

But overall I don't like that pedophile Gunn or the whole Marvel style of comic book movies. Gunn taking over the rest of DC shows that they are still just trying to chase and imamate Marvel movies which hasn't worked out and even if it does I hate those style of comic book movies. The original X-Men and Spiderman movies were good though.

Gunn's style is very different from Marvel's/Feige's, though. Gunn favors way more violence and way more crude/raunchy/dark humor, as seen in The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker.

Guardians of the Galaxy are the best of the Marvel movies so that bodes well. Gunn can get a little too weird at times so that’s a concern but he has the talent to pull this off.

With Cavill now out of the picture for DC, online fan forums for Game of Thrones, James Bond, and Marvel are all clamoring for Cavill to join their universes.

It's funny because it seems like all the other big franchises want Cavill, while the one franchise that actually has him under contract doesn't want him. After years, DC calls him back for a cameo in Black Adam just to dump him again. DC management is so dumb.

Cavill found himself in a confluence of different headwinds at the studio. Dwayne Johnson pushed for his return via the much-hyped cameo in Black Adam and a potential linchpin for Johnson's own DC universe franchise. But Black Adam has grossed $389 million worldwide, its soft performance calling into question Johnson's much-touted plans for a sequel and an eventual Adam vs. Superman movie even before Gunn's decision. The studio had its own plan as new film co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy wanted to make a Man of Steel sequel, having Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight to write the treatment. (Classic character Brainiac was to have been the villain of that piece, a source says.)

"In the end, he was a pawn in Dwayne's failed attempt to control a piece of DC," one insider observers.

Cavill, sources say, did not have a deal in place to return as Superman, only a verbal agreement that the studio would develop future projects. He was paid $250,000 each for his cameos. The actor in recent years had a resurgence thanks to starring in Netflix's popular fantasy series The Witcher, which saw him earning $1 million per episode. Cavill left the show this fall, although it's unclear if the promise of more Superman appearances were behind his exit.

Gunn and Safran are well aware of the sensitivities behind axing the popular Justice League cast by Zack Snyder as well as the sensitivities of parting ways with high-profile and popular talent. Forgoing a call to agents or producers, the executives met with Cavill to discuss their plans and seemed to indicate a potential new role down the road. The pair have also made overtures to Ben Affleck, aka Batman, asking him to direct a DC film for them while Jason Momoa — who may be done as Aquaman — has met with the duo as well, possibly about playing a new role.
