Jim Harbaugh gone to NFL

I also just want to point out for the "sky is falling" folks; good programs lose their assistants on a yearly and regular basis. Good head coaches find good assistants to replace them.

Generally not in February they don't. They could still pull it together for this year, I suppose but with the personell losses combined with losing both coordinators, it probably will be a bit of a rebuild.

It sounds like the OC will be promoted from within, and was semi-planned already. The DC is the big question. That has to be another home run hire.

tbh, it sounds like Gattis is just pissed that Michigan gave him the cold shoulder about a possible promotion

if he was talking about Harbaugh, he wouldn't have used the term "administration"

Yup. Sounds like Miami had been going after him since Virginia went elsewhere with their HC position, Harbaugh left and the Michigan admin didn't know much, wasn't willing to give him $600k above what he was already making, Harbaugh was not planning to take him to the NFL and he felt slighted by it all.

What I don't get is why he chose to burn that bridge publicly?

So Michigan planned for Harbaugh to not get a NFL job and for Gattis to leave for the same position at a lesser program?

So who is the OC we have waiting in the wings?

I think Michigan didn't know what Harbaugh was doing, Harbaugh wasn't planning to take Gattis, meanwhile Miami was offering him $600k more and Michigan wasn't willing to match. So Gattis felt slighted by it and left out.

Matt Weiss is going to be the next OC. At minimum he'll get some "co" title or "associate HC".

Great position coaches don't always translate into great coordinators. Ohio State has found this out multiple times already

I think Weiss was brought on board for that reason; a replacement for Gattis when Gattis eventually left.

Very well could be true but I'd be cautious calling it a for sure thing until he has proven himself. I thought Coombs was a home run when Day got him back from the NFL. Guy is a great recruiter and did nothing but pit 1st DBs into the NFL. Not so much.

Warriner had our O line playing like madmen. Got promoted to OC and completely lost his mojo.

Fickell at DC seemed to be really good but until he got more experience it wasn't going well

It's hit or miss for sure. But last year (well, prior to this season) when Weis was hired, that was the rumor at that point -- that he was a Gattis replacement; if Gattis was fired or if Gattis left for another job.

Matt Weiss has had one year as a RB coach at Baltimore, one year as a QB coach at Michigan.

All other positions, he held was as an assistant to whoever actually held the position.

We have no one on our staff with the experience to take over play calling. If Weiss is named OC, it is simply by default because we couldn't get anyone else to take the job.

As far as Gattis -- what Miami was offering him is a guaranteed job. Harbaugh showed his true feelings when he went on the interview giving his staff a week off during the end of recruiting. I'm surprised the only coaches we lost were McDonald and Gattis.

To go a step further -- I guarantee Harbaugh let his brother know he was going to be taking a job in the NFL if offered, which is why John fired his DC for no reason at all, which shocked Balmtimore fans, because he didn't want to lose out on McDonald. As John knew if McDonald hit the open market -- he'd be scooped up immediately.

The only issue is -- Harbaugh didn't get the job, so now he is dealing with the repercussions. You can spin it and try and say -- all teams lose coordinators, but they lose them to promotions or better programs to move up the ladder. Harbaugh lost his coordinators because he was going to leave them, so they followed his lead.

Gattis went to a lesser program with a head coach who is most likely going to jump at the first offer.

Mario Cristobal isn't jumping anywhere, he went to Miami as a player -- it is why he left Oregon to go to Miami.

He is going to have the same length leash that Harbaugh and Frost had when they went to their former schools.

What’s funny is Hoke would pull offers to recruits for talking to other programs and Harbaugh is out there begging for an NFL job and the university is like,” that’s cool, we are fine with being your FWB until you find something better.”

I don't blame Harbaugh for wanting to go to the NFL. It is the pinnacle of coaching and the sport. I blame him for how it was handled.

I'd consider it a FWB situation if he had been interviewed for another college job and then came back when he didn't get it. How can people fault anyone for wanting to go the NFL? There isn't a bigger accomplishment as a coach than winning a super bowl. Only 32 people in the US are NFL HC's at any point in time, so I understand the draw. Hell, it is the end goal for every single player in college too.

Harbaugh handled it terribly though and if the NFL is what he truly wants, he shouldn't be the HC at UM.

Yeah but not many make lateral moves.

Also, not many of them take a dump in the punch bowl on the way out of town.

Harbaugh reportedly has pissed off multiple assistants.

These are not merely "all major programs lose assistants" situations. They are dealing with a man child who only returned to Michigan because he got spurned by the NFL (though some Michigan fans want to pretend it was the other way around)
