I thought of Joe Delaney when that thread went up about a month ago to pick our "all-time" team. I never saw him play but Joe has been on that team for me since I was tiny and Steve Sabol told me his story. Sorry Barry Sanders, you gotta sit on my bench. What a man he was :thumb:

Damn. I read a couple of articles trying to figure out how this pond took two kids and an adult. Was it bad weather? Stuck in a drain or something? It doesn't seem like that's the case. Seems crazy to me that you could be that bad at swimming and still decide to go swimming in a pond with no lifeguard.

That said, good for Delaney to jump to action like that. Very courageous.

I rember this happening......Delaney had a promising career,yet he put his life in jeapordy for two people he didnt know,took a courageous person to put theirself in that position..........Sad story indeed.....

Not only did he have a promising career, but a wife, three kids of his own, and an inability to swim as well.

Absolutely courageous to risk himself like that.

As I understand it, there was nothing particularly dangerous about the pond. If that's the case, I'd like to think I'd go in for the boys. But I'm a strong swimmer and was a certified lifeguard at one point.

Delaney wasn't a good swimmer and went in wearing his clothes.

If I couldn't swim well, I'm not sure what I'd do, but no matter what, you don't go in wearing clothes. Gotta whip your dick out so everyone knows what's up. Just kidding. I'd leave undies on, but I'd for sure take off shirt, pants and especially shoes/boots.
 
In a pinch, you can even tie knots at the bottom of your pants, blow air into them at the waist and use it as a flotation device. It's not great, but it's better than nothing.

Wet clothes,especially blue jeans,weigh a fuck ton in the water,let alone trying to save yourself and someone else wrapped around you.....
Im sure that could of happened while the kids most likley were panic stricken......

Word.

You have to get the victim(s) calm enough that they can understand if they don't settle down, you won't help them. That would be damn difficult without some type of flotation device.

Given the circumstances, I'll say it was an incredibly brave decision he made, but also a pretty bad one as well.

Water they drowned in was a couple of acres I think, might have needed a very big stick :wink:
