I used to think Carol Wayne was hilarious. I think I remember my mom covering my eyes when she was on if I was up late.

It was funny watching Letterman. He had no idea what do to and was clearly getting frustrated

He became very dismissive when guests didn't play along with the act. There are some examples on Youtube where he failed miserably with a guest, usually when he wasn't amusing them and he knew it.
