I don’t remember it since I was 5 years old, but for UGA it was 1996 against Southern Miss to open the season. The last year UGA failed to make a bowl game.

In 2010, we lost a bowl game to UCF and we lost the season opener in 2011 to Boise State, but they were both ranked when the games were played

2010 against USF. To be fair tho, it was the Meineke Car Care bowl. And who can blame the players for withering under that pressure.

BYU and Georgia State in 2018 :(.

Before then, you have to go back to Memphis in 1996.

Air Force in the 1990 Liberty Bowl I think

Pre-Saban, Alabama had a reputation for losing to G5 teams.

In 2000, they started preseason #3 but lost to Southern Miss and UCF. They lost to Louisiana Tech in 1999 and won the SEC (that was the last SEC Champion to lose to a G5 team). They lost to Northern Illinois in 2003 and lost to UL Monroe in 2007 with Saban's first year.

Louisiana Monroe 2007. Saban compared it to 9/11 and Pearl Harbor afterwards.

I was in attendance in 99 when we lost to La Tech on a last second Hail Mary(was only like 35 yards but still). That was a bummer.

I paid fucking $30 or somewhere around that to watch us lose to fucking Northern Illinois on PPV.

Out of all of them, though, I would say the 2000 loss to Southern Miss was the most embarrassing. I watched that game and Andrew Zow could not hit the broad side of the barn but Dumbose kept trying to throw the ball. Southern Miss basically shut Alabama's offense out.

If you watched the game, Alabama wasn't even competitive and I think it was just do to bad coaching.

And we almost blew a 22-0 lead against Middle Tennessee in the first game in 02. But Freddie Roach saved us with a late game INT

They were ranked if I recall. That whole season was embarassing.Literally Returned everyone but Shaun Alexander and Chris Samuels form the SEC championship team in 99 and it was a fucking disaster. I was so lucky the one game I decided to go to that year was the Ole Miss game. Which we beat the fuck out of them

Agree. 2000 was embarrassing not just for Alabama but entire SEC because all the programs fell short. Florida and Tennessee also had rough years that year.

2002 and 2005 were both embarrassing for Tennessee because we were preseason top 5 but fell apart both years.

2016

Iowa lost to North Dakota State (only time Iowa has lost to FCS/DI-AA. Interesting, that same year, Iowa beat #2 (Game day rankings) Michigan.

Most embarrassing loss for any SEC team in my lifetime has to be when Miss State lost to Maine in the early 00’s. Does Maine even still have a football program?

UGA damn near and probably should have lost to Nicholls State in 2016. Their d-line completely whipped out o-line, and the only reason we barely won was because the Nicholls QB lost his helmet and had to sit out one play, and on that play the backup just straight up dropped the football, wasn’t forced, he just dropped it for an easy scoop and score. That was more embarrassing than any loss I can remember to be totally whipped in the trenches by an FCS team

As someone who was recruited by Maine when Buddy Teevens was the coach many moons ago, I feel qualified to say that they do indeed still have a football program...2-6 this year, but they were in the FCS semi-finals in 2018...they lost to Eastern Washington...who then lost to ND State...again.

Pretty good when you consider that I don't think Maine has ever produced a 4-star, let alone a 5-star, and 3-stars are rare as hen's teeth...not exactly a hotbed of prep school talent.

Not a lot of talent out of NE in general. UGA got the only 4 star to ever come out of Rhode Island in Xavier Truss
