They've screwed up.

Two years ago I said we should have hired Kiffin and the world would be totally different right now and now that they actually want Kiffin they have screwed that up. Word on the street is Auburn dragged their feet and put Kiffin in a bad spot so he just leveraged Auburn to get a better deal at Ole Miss. Don't blame him because if you can't do the hiring correctly how can you trust them to do anything else correctly?

Right now word on the street is that the Administration is pushing back on Freeze due to character issues and I totally believe that and to be honest see him as Malzahn 2.0 so why spend 35 million on buyouts to go back to Malzahnville.

I see four options for Auburn right now that can possibly salvage this and I have zero faith they will do any of them (I am putting them in my order of preference):

1. Kendal Briles - I think he is ready and has been groomed for years to be an HC so give him an incentive-heavy contract and go for it.
2. Prime Time - It's a risk but I think the nature of the game has changed so much that a relationship manager at HC that can deal with NIL, transfers and emotional issues is going to be a massive skill set.
3. Cadillac Williams - This is going to be the biggest risk and you will need to bring on a mentor to help him navigate for the first couple of years like David Cutcliffe who would take an analyst-type role but be there to help mentor and guide him through the pitfalls.
4. Dave Clawson - I see no way he comes though

Watch it won't be any of these guys and whatever they do will fail.

I think the Cutcliffe idea for Williams would be a great idea. Cutcliffe seems to have the personality to fit being a mentor.

I just threw that name out because its the first that came to me but if you hire Caddy he is going to need someone that isn't on his staff whom he can get honest feedback and answer questions. I'm not saying this would be a defacto coach but someone that has been there before and has your best interest in mind so a coach for the coach.

Of course since its a good idea they won't do it and honestly it wouldn't work for most but Caddy is so humble and honest that it would be a positive for him.

Kiffin fine but freeze has character issues....
👌
I hope you get your deion wish
I don't disagree with you but that is what they are saying. Makes zero sense but its Auburn.

Maybe firing the coach that had beaten Saban more than any other coach and generally had the team competitive every year during the 2020 Covid season wasn’t the best move.
Malzahn had to go because he couldn't develop a QB, had completely failed to recruit offensive linemen and his away record at UGA, Bama and LSU were beyond unacceptable. I'm sure you would love us to keep him but it was time to go.

Is Goff still alive? Perhaps he can get back in there....

Auburn hasn’t won at UGA since 2005, Bama has the GOAT coach and is gonna be tough to beat at home, and IIRC before last year, Auburn hadn’t won at LSU since the 90’s. That wasn’t just a Malzahn problem

Fact is he had Auburn the most consistently competitive of any coach they’ve had this century, and nobody had more wins against Saban.

I can see wanting to move on since a lot of the same things I said about Malzahn were true for Mark Richt, but firing after the Covid season was a trash move IMO, and if you’re gonna move on from a coach like Malzahn, you have to have a better replacement lined up than a guy who was mediocre at Boise State and had zero recruiting connections in the south

Put it this way, I was always at least a little nervous facing Auburn with Malzahn. Now I just see em as another Missouri

not everything is about Saban
I’d say at Auburn, who is not a traditional power, having a coach that gives their biggest rival while being coached by the GOAT more trouble than any other coach, it should mean a lot

Saban is getting older now and seems to be slipping a bit, this should be Auburn’s window coming up, but replacing Malzahn with Harsin has set them back years

Wasn't harsin like their 4th choice too....I thought they missed on some big names before settling on him

I don’t really remember TBH.

But to me if you’re gonna move on from a pretty good coach like that, you’d better pretty well have the next guy lined up before you officially move on
