Big Dog Axel went to sleep today, for the last time.

For some of you that know me, after my daughter was killed my wife got a dog, that I was vehemently against. Almost divorced my wife over getting this fucking asshole German Shepard. Supposed to be therapy, and healing for her...

I wanted nothing to do with this fucking mongrel. He ended up being the best dog any man has ever owned. Only flaw is I could never break him of digging small ankle snapping holes in my yard.

Found him this morning, in his favorite place to nap, over looking his territory. Thought he was asleep and hard of hearing....

Hardest part of the whole ordeal, aside from figuring out what to do with a 125lb German Shepard corpse, was sitting on thw information, and having to tell my daughter(21) that her shadow had passed.

Just know, that most of you, had a much better day than I did. Hope this helps.

So sorry. I am an animal lover and dogs are some of the best friends a guy could have.

I actually found this out later in life as the dogs we had growing up were small poodles and my mom's dogs.

When I got my first as a married with a kid adult I realized how good they are for your soul. We put her down after 17 yrs. Last year. Blind, deaf and couldn't walk at the end. Back legs gave out.

Wife made the call as I couldn't. We have another that brings out every emotion with me. She is such a lovable piece of shit.

We put down our 17-year-old border collie Zelda on July 11th of last year. She was physically struggling for a long time, but her love and appetite were still strong; so I fought the deed until she gave me the undeniable sign that it was time.

On the trip to the vet, my wife drove while Zelda laid in my lap. I had my phone Bluetoothed to the Jeep with all of the songs (thousands) shuffling over the stereo. Shit you not, "Wisconsin Death Trip" (Static-X), "Falling Away From Me" (Korn) and "Murderer" (Avatar) played as I was on the trip to put my dog down.

how rude GIF

But be thankful that he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

I’ll forever be grateful that the dog I got when I was 3 and died when I was 21 never got down and was still chasing his ball the day he died and just went to sleep and didn’t wake up. I’m so glad I didn’t have to get him out down or ever see him suffer

My first dog, Vader, was a Husky/Golden Retriever mix. He died (age 15) with his head in my lap on Sunday May 21, 2017 at about 2pm as I comforted him in my mudroom from the internal neurological trauma he had experienced earlier that morning. Vet offices are closed Sundays, so I had to figure out what to do with his corpse for a day - as our plan was to have him cremated. I decided to use a card table as a gurney and recruited my son to help me carry him to the garage. "This is haunting" my teen son exclaimed as the deed was executed.

So what did you do with Axel?

@Peter Gozintite, for both of my deceased dogs, my family collaboratively assembled photos, their collars and ashes into big shadowboxes that hang on our wall. Doing so aided the healing process and serves as a lasting remembrance of their presence. ...Just an idea to consider as you and your family grieve the loss...

sounds like he was a good dog. Sorry for your loss.

How many years did you have him?

I am so sorry to hear this Peter. I am sorry you have lost such a valued pet. It is a very true fact that these animals become such a huge part of our lives they become part of the family. My thoughts will be with y'all today hoping you all can cope with this sad event.

p.s. I think I met that big lug and patted his head when I stopped by your place years ago. He was a gorgeous dog!

Ugh. I found him so soon after it happened he was still warm. So after attempting some K9 CPR, I googled how to check a dogs pulse, and realized it was over. I called the same people we had put our last dog down a couple years ago. Took them 2 hours to get here. Called the wife hone from work so she could say goodbye.

When the driver got there we rolled him up in a blanket and took him away.

11.5 years @ill.

He should have e had another couple years, but pure breed large dogs don't live as long.

Been through so much worse, but it sucks.

I never had a dog I didn't have to make " the choice" for. Thought it would have been easier if they just passed. I was wrong. I think when by the time you go through with it, you've been preparing yourself for months. You're an angel of mercy at that point.

I have an 11.5 yr old 70 lb dog who is still going strong, but starting to see him slow down as of late.

I will be a mess when he goes...likely take a day off or so. Need to see if bereavement allows for that.
