I’m pretty sure that should have been called a catch, but replay confirmed no catch

When Acuna tore his ACL the first time, Jazz Chisholm rounded the bases for an inside the park homer, so if it wasn’t a catch, it’s kosher

But if an outfielder is on the ground injured, incapacitated and writhing in pain, IMO, you should just give the batter a double. Seems like a cheap way to get a homer, but the rules are the rules, so if the ball ain’t dead, gotta keep running, or in Matt’s case, walking around the bases

I mean, he shouldn't have run into the wall full speed like that...that's not the batter's fault.

Buddy, you Philly fans practically worshipped Aaron Rowand for going face first into a wall full speed

If he wasn't transferring the ball when he hit the wall and it popped out, then its not a catch.

I agree its a crappy way to get a HR, but the rules are the rules. He isn't the first to benefit, won't be the last. Sucks that the guy broke his arm, but he will be popular in the clubhouse for at least giving everything he had to try to make the play.

On the flipside, Callihan fucked up his left arm. His right arm - throwing arm - still worked. Get that ball in, THEN roll around the ground in pain. If he would've fucked up his right arm, you throw it in as best as you can with your left before worrying about your own well-being. ...At least, that's how I was brought up to play.

They showed a replay in game that showed a better view but you could see the arm break, so they won’t show it again. He caught the ball and held onto it after the arm break. Ball fell out after the pain set in while he was getting his glove off.

I agree with the second paragraph. Just seems cheap. You can’t fault the hitter, both of the instances that I saw live, the batter wasn’t proud of the homer

Kinda feel for the guy. 4th game in the majors replacing an injured Candelario going full effort to try and stick with the big league club and breaks his am for his troubles

if Olson stops running then kangaroo court takes his next paycheck. He did what he had to do.

First thing I thought of when watching the clip, at least toss the ball to the centerfielder, or something.

And silver lining, he’ll be getting an MLB paycheck and service time for his IL stint since his injury happened in the Majors. Probably a good windfall for a former third round pick that has spent 6 seasons in the minors

With a break that severe I would worry about shock, but he's writing in pain so not really the case here. I think he assumed he would be awarded the catch, and had no shot at the lead runner anyways.

Not sure what year he was drafted, but third rounders still get a nice little paycheck. Last draft 3rd round was worth at least $700k and up to $1M.

But yeah the daily contract rate is MUCH better for MLB than he would have made in the minors.

2019. I don’t know what his bonus was, but knowing the Reds, they might have drafted him because he was cheap

we did.

but we didn't say the runner should have stopped because he ran into a wall.

you say it in your OP that they should make it a double because the fielder injured himself.
Yeah, also said as the rules are the runner needs to keep running

But I also think balls lost in the Wrigley Field Ivy should be live and no ground rule double

so do you want it to be a ground rule double or not?

I’d like for it to be, just seems like a cheap home run. But if the ball is live in circumstance should the batter stop running

Hell, I think plays like the ball that bounced off Canseco’s head and went over the wall should be scored as a 4 base error
