McCord Enters Portal...

He was decent enough for the team to win games in a relatively ugly fashion. Also keep in mind that he had the best WR corps in the nation to throw to and he had (probably) an NFL tight end.

The O-Line had issues all year long, but a "good" college QB would have put up much larger numbers than he ever did. Taking their previous QB final seasons

McCord - 3,100 yards, 24 TDs and 6 INTs. No running threat at all, -65 yard rushing tally due to sacks and no TDs.
Stroud - 3,688 yards, 41 TDs and 6 INTs. Minimal running threat, 108 yards no TDs.
Fields - 2,100 yards, 22 TDs and 6 INTs. Dangerous rushing threat, 383 yards and 5 TDs. (in only 8 games, he produced roughly 2x those TD numbers the previous year in a full season).
Dwayne Haskins - 4,831 yards, 50! TDs and 8 INTs. Minimal running threat but 108 yards and 4 TDs
JT Barrett - 3,053 yards, 35 TDs and 9 INTs. Dangerous running threat, 798 yards and 12 TDs. (injury shortened season)

McCord was fine, not great, sometimes good. An above average college QB but was by far the worst of the past 5 QBs the Buckeyes have had. Though the systems have changed a bit between JT Barrett and this year, the overall talent level around the QB has been relatively the same. A GOOD QB with the weapons Ohio State has on offense would have put up much larger numbers.

Haskins and Barrett weren't Stroud or Fields but they at least had some upper level qualities. McCord doesn't have a single upper level quality, and his lack of mobility and his like C- at best defense reading skills make him just a average-above average (at best) QB as a whole.

Yep. McCord is a fine bus driver. To win a championship you normally need more than that...and especially in today's game.

I forgot Haskins had 50 flippin passing touchdowns. And IIRC, he lost his starting position towards the end of the season. Barrett was a pretty average passer but dangerous runner. McCord is a pretty accurate passer but the numbers speak and they aren't anything more than mediocre considering the giant talent advantage he had around him most games.

Edit: i mean for fuck sake, he had Marvin Harrison Jr to throw to! How can you not put up giant numbers with him to throw to??

It's stupid to sit put with a average QB just because "well the grass might not be greener" that's exactly how you don't win in college football in this era. McCord is not winning us a title I think that is clear.
You know your situation way better than me. But, I don't think he's "average."

People said that about Stetson until he got us 2 natties. Again, grass isn't always greener.

Barrett from all accounts was a great field general leader type as well, his running ability too made up for him being a pretty average passer. Haskins was a minimal running threat in the traditional sense but he was able to move well enough when he had to to not be a total sitting duck like McCord. The Oline will probably be about the same next year, so we need someone who can move around a lot better than McCord. They don't have to be Barrett running, but someone who can move enough so that the D can't just tee off in straight up pass rushes constantly. They don't have to be a elite passer, just someone who can get the ball out accurately enough to our skill players. A quicker decision maker than McCord as well. That kind of guy we can win with. I don't think theres a elite Fields type in the portal this year, but there are a couple of guys who could fill the role I describe.

Stetson was a flatout gamer that could also extend plays in the pocket. Kirby has done a great job with Georgia's offense despite not churning out the traditional number of stud NFL players - Bowers might be the only guy from your two NC runs to be drafted in the first round when all is said and done. Beck looks the part for you guys as well.

Biggest problem with OSU is we've done the opposite - churned out first rounders but can't put it together the last couple years. We badly need a QB who can use his legs to extend plays with the offense we run, and I'm thinking that's why we're looking at Ward and Leonard as possible bridge QBs until Air takes over in 2025.

He was also a giant human being. Hard to bring down in the pocket and god help you if he got a full head of steam and it was your job to square him up.

I see Ohio State fans other places online worrying about Brown transferring out if we bring in a transfer. The guy couldn't beat out McCord and he looked not good throwing the ball in his I know small sample sizes, I really don't think him transferring out would be that big of a loss, especially with Kienholz and Noland still waiting in the wings for 2025 if we bring in one of those 1 year stop gap QBs for 2024.

Traynum just entered the portal. This one does kinda sting a bit. Williams gone, Pryor transferring, and Trey gotta imagine is going to declare.

That leaves us with Hayden, who is a great first option but after that??

No. We had 10 guys transfer after last season. This is nothing new. Nobody outside of McCord and Fleming who’s transferred had an even somewhat favorable depth chart outlook for next year. McCord was going to have to earn to keep the home and Fleming likely would just been in his same role of after thought 3rd/4th option in favor of younger studs at WR.

I love attempting to hype up Fleming. He’s ok but he’s an often injured guy who’s never lived up to expectations, also has drop problems too often. As mentioned above he would end up being our 3rd or 4th WR in the end next year.

Yeah, Fleming doesn't really feel like a big loss save for experience. I'm sure some of those younger receivers will step up and you probably get someone through the portal.

Fleming is pretty good as a blocker, but you can't be just a blocking WR unless you're playing for a service academy lol. He's been pretty mid as a actual receiver, not a high level route runner, drop issues and seemingly always hurt on top of it. He might carve out a decent year next year for a more mid level P5 if he can stay healthy, he'd be good for like a Nebraska type team (rumored Corn is looking at him along with McCord) but he's not the high level guy he was projected to be out of HS.

Doesn't help that he's been in such a crowded WR group. Had to contend with JSN/Olave/Wilson in 2021, 2022 and 2023 were his chances but he still had to contend with MHJ/Egbuka and he just never really looked like more than a WR3. Hard to get significant reps as a WR4+ unless a team is throwing in garbage time or injuries force a team's hand. He had a decent 2022 but he regressed this year
