Meanwhile at Oklahoma...

Again -- every scenario you mentioned only benefits OU. So what happens if he stays, runs the scout team and only takes snaps in mop up duty the rest of the year? What does that do for his future? Essentially you are saying -- OU can give up on him and put their own self interest first, but Rattler shouldn't do the same for himself?

This. Like it or not but college football is a business now and if Rattler makes a business decision that's fine. If you don’t like it, maybe don’t boo him and call for his backpack two or three weeks ago. Their fanbase can't shit on him and then be surprised and outraged when he walks.

I think this is revisionist. Mayfield and Davis Webb spent time as starters when they were true freshman. Mayfield wanted to be guaranteed a starting spot and Coach Bro said no so he walked. In hindsight that was a mistake but Mahomes had nothing to do with it.

The following season Webb got hurt against Oklahoma State and Mahomes came in and he sucked. It was a fairly close game (we lost our starter earlier in the season and the backup wasn't great) but once Mahomes came in the game was over. He was lost. He caught his groove later in the season and hasn't looked back but coming out of HS he was a 3* guy. Oklahoma State recruited him but he was a backup offer if we didn't get Kyle Allen or Mason Rudolph. Allen went to Aggie and Rudolph committed literally the next day. I loved Mason but in hindsight Mahomes to Washington, Hill, and Johnson would have been interesting.
And just why do you think Coach Bro wouldn't guarantee him a starting spot? It ain't revisionists. Coach GQ knew what he had coming in. As soon as the rest of the players, coaches, alumni got word of Mahomes' talent (even if it was potential talent) and saw what he would turn into, (inlcuding Mayfield and Webb) it was game over. Writing was on the wall.

Mahomes was a 3* guy coming out of high school. I ain't arguing that. And he wasn't 100% ready to go as a true freshman. But, it ain't revisionists. I live in the Lubbock area and have to put up with a whole bunch of Red Fader alumni/fanatices....some of 'em BMDs. They knew the back story. @TechRaiderRider is right. Signing Mahomes was the "issue". All the crap about the Kliff/Mayfield feud was after the fact.

He signed up for a "tour of duty" which in this case is a year of playing football. He played like shit and has maybe lost his starting job. So now it's everyone else's fault that he's in this situation. Those mean students calling for Caleb and that head coach who has the temerity to demote him and a dozen other reasons are what has caused this. He's a victim; poor guy. And the selfish fans and coaches are picking on him. Fuck that. He didn't perform. He's maybe going to have to ride the pine and he's whizzed away his Heisman and his projected high draft status. It's on him. The team didn't quit on him and he didn't have an injury. He didn't perform. So now you think he's got every right/reason/excuse to cut and run to another school and the fans should just STFU and the coaching staff should be left in a lurch? LMAO The guy has no ballz if he quits the team in the middle of this season. He's a gelding. After the season is finished, he can do whatever he thinks is best. But not fulfilling his responsibilities to the team before then is BS. It's another 90 days......not a lot of time when you're talking about integrity. This is more about character than anything else.

He's not a victim. He's someone who has to make a business decision. It's no different than Kelly Bryant. His goal is to be in the league and if that means he's at UCLA next week, or working on his draft status then it is what it is.

Then why didn't Mahomes start day 1? If he was such hot shit then that should have happened. If he didn't come in D1 ready then Mayfield had no reason to bolt.

And let's remember, Mayfield was arguably the better college QB. Both were outstanding but one won a Heisman and was a #1 pick. I don't know that the other guy went to a bowl game.

Good gawd man. I'm disappointed in you. You're very familiar with the Big 12. Mahomes played on teams that weren't even close to being .500. And you know damn well there ain't no way in hell Texas Tech has ever had equivalent overall talent to Oklahoma. Don't you think the supporting cast has something to do with Mayfield's success? If not, then.................

Name a Heisman winner that played on a team that finished .500 or less. I'll wait.

Yep. When you sign to be QB at a school like OU, it's because you are looking to get to the NFL. Not playing makes that more difficult. If he goes to another program and plays well, he could still be a 1st or 2nd round pick. If he stays and doesn't see the field again, he's probably looking at being a late round pick or an undrafted FA.

Not necessarily. Sometimes the writing is on the wall. If memory serves, USC had a qb or 2 leave when they saw Sam Darnold run the scout team offense as a true freshman.

Why don't you simply say -- "Spencer Rattler shouldn't do what is best for his future, but what is best for Oklahoma's future"

And yeah, I was going to qualify my statement by saying he was on a team with no defense but that's pretty much assumed.

That being said if he was such a stud why did he end up at Tech? His 3 offers were OSU, Tech, and Rice and like I said he was a backup plan for us. He's a great talent and I would have loved to have him on campus (him and Tyreek in college-WOW) but it's not like he was a can't miss 5*.

He's not going anywhere.

Yall are wasting keystrokes.

Sure, he's disappointed but he isn't stupid. Going somewhere else today/tomorrow/next week accomplishes what? Showing that mean old OU they don't know what they're missing? Heh....nah, I'll bet anyone that he's way smarter than that. I'll also bet anyone that after the initial sting of getting benched and all the feels he felt, he slowly realized that if put in the same position as LR he would do the exact same thing. He's a little brash and conceited, its true....but he isn't stupid. He was QB1 for a reason. His failures can't be pinned on anyone but him...and LR has even thrown himself under the bus a little bit for SR's failures.

Now...after the season is completed I'll also bet you he's out of Norman like a bottle rocket. We see and feel this attrition every single year.

For every kid that wants to leave, I'll guarantee you there are 5 wanting to come on.

Didn't know that about Paul Hornung. Good catch. Playing for ND probably helped him overcome a losing season. Safe to say he wouldn't have won it playing for Texas Tech.

I don't follow recruiting that close. Have no idea why he ended up at Tech. (Mayfield ended up at Tech as a walk on IIRC.) And those "can't miss 5*s" ain't looking too swift at several places this year.

IIRC, I think there were a few things. Mahomes hadn't completely matured yet. Don't think his HS team was too swift. There was speculation he would go the baseball route. But I think the main reason was Coach GQ was considered the ultimate QB whisperer at the time after his work with Johnny Football at A&M. @TechRaiderRider You have any insight as to how Tech was able to land Mahomes?

...and here is the NEXT one.

That's exactly what I'm telling these tools but they think he's justified to bolt days after being demoted as the starter because "college football is a business". Doesn't work like that in the real world. I don't think he's stupid at all. He'll understand why (IF,IF,IF) this all came to be. Maybe he stays the starter or maybe he doesn't. Either way he'll play plenty in what could be a great year for OU. After this season......he's history. Vaya con Dios.

It’s not a good character look to the NFL either. Hurts was a great model to follow in this situation and he had EVERYONE cheering and being an advocate for him.

Leaving tomorrow gives him a 6 month head start to find a new school, find a new place to live, move his entire life to another state, get to know his new teammates, his new coaching staff, learn a new playbook, get acclimated to his new surroundings and have himself ready to take over a new offense in week 1 next year.

What you SHOULD be asking is.......what does sitting on the bench the rest of the year at OU accomplish?

OU fans are selfishly looking at this as an OU fan, not a Spencer Rattler fan. Using the logic that he'd gain nothing leaving early to find a new school, would be like saying, that early enrollees in HS gain absolutely nothing by getting to campus 6 months before those commits who who don't show up until Spring ball.

blah GIF

I can't stand Rattler. I think he is a cocky, arrogant, prick. But it laughable to hear OU fans say he'd gain nothing by leaving now?!?!
If LR chooses a true freshman as his starter and Rattler's end goal is to get to the NFL (which it is) -- staying at OU accomplishes absolutely nothing.

OU fans want him to stay ONLY because it gives them a safety net if the true freshman struggles once teams have tape on him. They couldn't care less about Rattler's future.
