The Hurricanes announced Friday morning that Gattis has been shown the exit after a terrible 5-7 season.

Gattis won the Broyles Award in 2021 for the top assistant coach in college football when he was with the Michigan Wolverines. Now, after a single season with the Hurricanes, he’s gone.

It's so tough to be an Offensive Coordinator these days Jimbo Fisher even had to fire himself. I can't even keep count of how many OC jobs are out there open and this happens right before the final signing day.

Life comes at you fast. Good thing he didn't burn any bridges in the industry on the way out.

Has never been good as an OC. Surprised Miami hired him in the first place. He was pretty bad at Michigan.

Why now
Hasn't the season been over for a while

Apparently he wasn't present at on and off campus recruiting events, nor was he with transfer portal targets.

WTH does he think his job is?

Literally, half your job as a college coach is recruiting and if you suck at that then it won't matter how you do the other half.

Don't want to recruit? Coach in the NFL.

ND had this problem, both with its last head coach and Clark Lea. Lea was an outstanding defensive coordinator, was the best coach at in game adjustments that they had in years. But the guy hated recruiting and it seemed he never wanted to do it. We’re still paying a bit for that.

And the other half of the job he was letting the head coach make most of the play calling so what exactly was he doing?

man... how much was that because of ND itself?

I guess you could say it was a top-down problem. Kelly was lazy and it had a trickle down effect.

Freeman has made a specific mandate that everyone from the top down are going to recruit their asses off and not be afraid to go after the big fish.

Kelly flat out said they’re shopping down a different aisle which was his way of saying we have no shot at 5* guys so we’re not going to bother trying. Freeman would rather try and lose them concede at all. He may lose more then he wins those recruiting battles but if he can grab a few here and there and consistently grab 4* like this last class and the next years then ND can get back to actually competing in playoffs.

To bring the discussion back to OC’s I don’t think Rees loves recruiting but if he’s going to remain on Freeman’s staff he knows he has to.

Lol some Michigan fans wanted Gattis to be their head coach if Harbaugh left after the 2021 season.

Guy was a sham. All the "speed in space!" crap was a myth. Harbaugh's fingers are all over the Michigan offense. That's even more evident considering Michigan did just as well this year without Gattis and Gattis bombed at Miami.

BK got a good class this cycle his first year at LSU.. They tend to recruit themselves for the most part..which I think was a big part of BK accepting that job in the first place

Yes, local kids for the most part want to go there and it’s a good recruiting area so he doesn’t need to do much. Although Jaiden Ausberry chose ND and he practically lived on LSU’s campus.

You got to work hard to sell ND to a lot of kids, especially now that schools can give them s financial nest egg if their pro career doesn’t work out.

Honestly, if it happened I wouldn't be shocked if they elevated Gattis; especially given this late in the cycle.
