Miracle on Ice - 43 years ago today

Missed the anniversary of the greatest pregame speech of all time on Friday…US played Finland and would get the gold medal with a win. There was even a scenario where they would not medal at all if they lost. Herb Brooks came into the locker room, said “if you lose this game, you’ll take it to your fucking grave.” and walked out. They didn’t lose.

He actual paused, turned around and said, “your fucking grave”. Then walked out.

I’m not a boomer but I can appreciate kicking some Soviet ass. I grew up playing hockey and at one point in elementary school learned about the Miracle on Ice and got really into it. I did a project about it and actually got the chance to do a phone interview with Mike Eruzione. Nobody else had any idea what I was talking about but it was really cool.

I like to think of this as a prelude to the Miracle:

I guess that is one way to look at it. Of course when I look at the roster of that 1976 Philly team that beat the Red Army it appears that there was not one player from the USA on it. Paul Holmgren was the only US born player to play for the Flyers that season and it looks like he played just one game (in March). Every single player that played for the Flyers against the Red Army in 1976 was Canadian.

This becomes even funnier when we see that the video has been titled "USA Broad Street Bullies vs. USSR Red Army"

And who the fuck is "David Clarke"? Apparently he was a "young hotshot college player" when they drafted him? And he just keeps on calling him "David"!

Hell, I would have much rather have watched a video of the actual game between the Flyers and the Red Army than spend any time listening to this guy talk about it. Of course he has mostly made football analogies in what I have watched so far anyway :noidea:

This was before I cared about hokey at all, and at best I am a casual fan. I heard the term but had no idea about what the BSBs were. BTW, I love fat electricians storytelling style and he is accurate enough to spark curiosity.

I understand that he is not an "expert" and is not really pretending to be one but I think that he loses all credibility at putting these events into perspective with the mistakes that he makes :noidea:

He is actually a comedian so I can forgive the mistakes. Many of his stories have allowed me to research people and stories that I never heard of. This is another case where the real story is better than the comedian's take, just told as well.
