Actually, don't know and don't care. They were getting a different bed for the now-teenage daughter. Bed was missing one screw (easy enough to replace) and one of the rails was damaged. Obviously marked up from a kid owning it and doing dumb shit with it (plenty of small makeup/paint marks on it). But I guess she (the giver) thought it would be easier to get rid of if someone came in and took it for nothing. She didn't have tools of her own to take it apart herself, which was nice because it was easy for me to keep track of how I took things apart to put it back together.
In fairness to her, she's giving something away for free on the Internet, so she has no idea what kind of idiot was coming into her house to take this bed out. She was a little surprised when I showed up with a couple of drills and a ratchet set (wound up not needing the ratchet, but I figured you never know if there's a bolt or two somewhere). We also wound up taking apart a metal bed frame so she could move it somewhere else in the house.
