Mookie Betts had some high praise for Jacob deGrom after the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the New York Mets earlier this week.

"I don't even know how to answer," Betts said in the locker room after Wednesday's game about what it's like to face deGrom. "He's pretty much the best, maybe the best to ever pitch. He's a tough task."

DeGrom is a good pitcher but not the best to ever pitch.

deGrom has been amazing and he should probably be in the HOF, but I'm not sure I can place him among the greatest pitchers just because of the rather light innings/career. He has the highest ERA+ all-time for starting pitchers, but it's only 3 points higher than Kershaw (158 to 155) and Kershaw has nearly double the innings that deGrom does (2545 to 1298). Pedro had a career ERA+ of 154 and he threw 2827.1 innings. Clemens had a 143 ERA+ but he also threw 4916.2 innings.

deGrom has been ridiculous since the beginning of 2018 (1.94 ERA, 204 ERA+, 0.86 WHIP, 12.1 K/9, 1.8 BB/9, 25.2 WAR in 617.1 innings) but he also missed the majority of 2021/2022. I'm not sure I'd even say he has the greatest peak. Not only did Pedro Martinez have a better ERA+ from 1997-2003 (213), but he also did it while throwing 1408 innings over that span. Maddux also had a 202 ERA+ from 1994-98 and threw 1140.1 innings (and that includes *two* strike shortened seasons). Randy Johnson had a mere 187 ERA+ from 1999-2002, but he also threw 1030 innings in just four seasons. Walter Johnson had a 185 ERA+ from 1912-1919 while throwing 2735.1 innings over that span.

it's just crazy to think he didn't reach the majors until 26... and it's not like you could say they kept him down too long. His minor league track record was pretty unremarkable and he struggled in AA/AAA (granted that was the PCL). There wasn't much buzz around him as a prospect.

though to be fair, Eno Sarris did write this back in 2014: Why Jacob deGrom is Better Than We Thought

I remember back when Mookie was batting against Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan.

Nolan Ryan is nowhere close to being the greatest. Lmao.
