Anyone else type up a long reply to a particular post or thread, but then delete it all? Even though it is a complete rebuttal of misinformation from the other(s), but realize that it won't change any minds and only result in attacks on you, not your argument. Ending up a complete waste of time, but also saving time from not having to provide multiple follow-ups in a never ending cycle that runs into a roadblock of preconceived viewpoints that disregards any information to the contrary.

I mean, I enjoy a good debate, but that requires an open mind and mutual respect. "Listening, not just waiting for your time to talk" is a mantra I try to live by, but when someone keys/attacks one small thing while ignoring the other 95% they'd have zero argument against just becomes pointless. Debate then becomes argument and vitriol over meaningless crap, where nothing ever progresses.

I know I've probably deleted more posts than I've actually posted.

Yes!!! Quite a few times. Less since I’ve not been in the PF.

I will also say that I don’t always do this because it wont change any minds, but because I’ve written a novel in reply and maybe need to think more before I write.

Sometimes, I provide a rebuttal or follow-up anyway (depending on the topic) because it's not just the one person you're engaged with who reads your perspective. ...Sometimes the person you're engaged with is really just a step stool to reach a broader audience.

Yes, a reply to a thread I deleted in the PF led to this thread.

There is value in being heard from the silent observers, if there are any present.

If I type something long, it stands, when I erase a post, it’s usually when I type an insult that goes too far.

It really boils down to a difference between logical debate versus emotional argument. The former is a convergence opportunity, while the later serves only divergence.

Some people thrive on divergence.

Pardon my sexism, but it's f'n impossible to completely omit emotion when you're engaged in debate with a female. She's always going to inject emotion.

Also, pardon my use of the words "impossible" and "always" - I'm usually the first one who says "never say never" (or related), but this is an undebatable and unbreakable truism encoded into human DNA.

Emotion may be hard to overcome, as many topics aren't sterile from the human condition, and that "passion" is what leads to many of these differences of opinion. However, once it becomes a detriment of reason/logic, then divergence takes over.

In the PF, I just read the original then the first few replies. After which I go to the end to see what off topic subject matter is being fought over and what back and forth mud slinging is going on between the usual 8 to 10 leftie and rightie suspects. Same dudes every time without fail.

Always entertaining.

I’ll agree to most women....and quite a few men for good measure. Especially when we are talking politics.

Interesting thing in my head while I’m here (not pursuant to your quoted post).....we are always told to not talk about religion and politics in most circles. We have a philosophy board here. And while I see some debates there can get contentious it’s nothing like the Pf.

Interesting, that.

Yes, a reply to a thread I deleted in the PF led to this thread.

I began questioning if there are many silent observers out there. Without that audience it’s just the same shit circus. And many there like that circus. More power to them.

I just feel better not seeing the show anymore.

Sometimes

sometimes I just roll my eyes and move on to the next post.

Circus, circle jerk, what's the difference.

I once worked up long, well thought out, eloquent, rebuttal to a post that included some of my finest wisdom and humor. It was a genuine masterpiece in forum literature.
Then my computer froze and I lost it all.

My response ended up something like, "yeah, well, fuck you."
