This came up earlier (couldn't find the thread) but I've now read what they are saying is that the scholarship level of 85 players is not changing but you are not capped at 25 players per class. This became necessary due to the transfer portal and the need for teams to recruit over the 25 threshold.

I actually think teams were doing this anyway by counting some towards the past class, grey shirts, and other means but now the NCAA is recognizing that is stupid and just allowing teams to sign who they need to in order to get to 85.

So you aren't going to be able to put 120 people on scholarship like they used to back in the day.

This sounds like it will be going back to the tactics used in the 1970s-1990s where teams brought in 50 players a class and then cut half of them by the end of Fall Practice to meet roster limit.

(Yes, I know the 50 per class is likely an exaggeration but this was a common tactic in recruiting in the past).

Didn’t Tennessee semi recently bring in three straight 35+ recruit classes?

To be honest I'm sure that isn't the intent but will there be a loophole that allows that type of practice? After the NCAA NIL debacle, I would hope they think it out better or it maybe the last straw.

Agree. I think the parts are moving so fast that changes are made before all the impact of the changes are being considered.

The issue was the Supreme Court ruling. You had a court with not a lot of background with college sports make a major decision that impact the college sports.

This will help programs with mass decommits or transfers when there’s a coaching change. The new coach can restock the cupboard quicker.

Yep Texas will have 37 new players on the roster this season

That all sounds reasonable.
I must be missing something.
This used to be the "over signing" debate; IE signing over the 25 limit because you were assuming some players would leave and if they didn't, you'd find ways out of it "grey shirting".

But now that any player can just bolt at any time, it made it even more necessary to remove that cap. It allows teams to sign the class size they need; only limited by the 85 total scholarships.

I think there is some rule that you can't go over the 85. So you can't sign 39 to get to 95, and then cut 10.

Also, does this really matter? If NIL allows you to pay $30 million of players, who cares about the scholarship. We are giving you $1 million a year ... you are expected to pay your way to school.

That's one hell of a payroll if you do that.. Walk in classes would be better than some schools scholarship classes

You know it is a matter of time before that happens if NIL stays the way it is.
