His stats are kinda inflated by his UNC/BYU/USC/Navy performances, four pretty bad defenses (honestly, most of the defenses they faced were bad). He struggled against Stanford/Clemson/Syracuse/UNLV.
 
Calling him the starter is a bit of a stretch. He was the starter by default because Buchner got hurt in Week 2.

Next year ND was likely to have 6 QB’s on roster (Buchner, Pyne, Angelli, Powlus Jr., Kenny Minchey, and a transfer QB because they are definitely shopping for one).

Pyne is very limited and wasn’t going to beat out Buchner, the transfer, or even guaranteed to beat out Angelli. I would wager anything that Freeman and/or Rees had a chat with him about his future.
 
Seems like a good guy and a hard worker but he just doesn't have enough talent.
