Off-Season Thread: Why Are So Many Punt Returners Fielding The Ball Inside The 10-Yard Line?

It was an epidemic this year of players fair catching on like the 6. For my entire life, I thought it was written in stone to put your feet on the 10-yard line and not field anything under that.
We haven't done it all year, and pretty much ONLY did it against Alabama. It made no sense and almost lost us that game like 4 different times.

Maybe the same reason coaches use 'analytics' and go for it on 4th down all the fucking time, and screw themselves over more often than not.
Add to that the newer kicking techniques that kickers now master to pin the ball inside the five, and methinks we have a winner.

Because you would have to actually teach these guys the 'fundamentals' of the game, or some shit.

Especially those Aussie punters that are former rugby players, they are used to doing that.

I wonder if there is a stat on how many punts were downed inside the 10 over the years.

Ohio States return game has been so sad for so long can’t remember the last time we had an even slightly threatening punt return game.

All I know is there was a fundamental change this year and fair catching inside the 5 is moronic.

Catching inside the 5 is just retarded. Even if punters have mastered the art it’s still worth letting it bounce for the chance it goes into the end zone at that point.

I'm just rooting for them to cleanly catch it

still not worth the risk of muffing or getting knocked the f out for 2 or 3 yards. inside the 10, you should just be letting your rb hit that hole 3 times anyway.

I would agree but there are many of the top coaches that disagree, so I am deferring to the professionals.

Letting a ball go can allow you to get pinned at the 1 if the ball checks up or the coverage gets there, but fielding adds the chance of a muff (still pissed at the one last week) and takes away any chance of a good bounce your way bringing it out.

But I'm old school that way.

Agreed. I was screaming at my TV on Michigan’s last chance before OT. “Why are you trying to catch that ball!”
