But Smart has been clear that culture matters more and while he will process players, he will work the portal, he is not going to buy his team or rely on mercenaries except to fill clear needs for day 1 starters. He is focusing all NIL on players who are there and have bought in.

I don't think the bolded is anywhere near the truth because you can't tell me he isn't having NIL discussions with recruits and not offering "market rates" to 5 stars in order to get their commitment. Now the money being thrown around on the internet is 90% BS as is most of the stuff you read but it would be naive not to acknowledge NIL discussions are happening with recruits with the schools (which shouldn't be happening by rule but we all know it is).

I wouldn't be surprised if this story wasn't leaked in order to make it more difficult for Georgia to land players b setting too high of expectations on what they essentially are going to get paid.

This plus the fact that players are going into the portal just to get NIL deals is why I hate all this NIL crap to begin with. What we have created is not sustainable and a new system needs to be put in place where these kids are just paid out right but under contract with salary caps. If we continue to have unlimited free agency and what amounts to no salary cap eventually college sports are going to be damaged by it.

No. But I will be clear as to what I am saying. I am saying that after almost a decade of hearing what a saint Jim Tressell was and then listening to Meyer's arrogant shit its nice that the playing field is more level.

Frankly, I think the out-of-control NIL stuff might hurt Oklahoma. OU's not some bunch of homeless who can't afford to spend some money when it's necessary and we're not naïve. We know buying players is the new thing. The problem is the new way of dealing with players isn't going down well with a lot of fans/donors. We'll have to see if it eventually leads to a lack of commitment to fork out what might be needed to buy a really good team. Some dedicated people are trying hard to put together the $$$ to do what is necessary but it's not there yet in the amounts that will likely be needed to compete at the highest level in the SEC. I could provide details but you get my drift.

Schools ain’t paying it are they? Just getting their “collectives” to do it aren’t they. If schools are forking it over directly, then the are dumber than the collectives.

No, schools aren't paying it. But they're almost certainly facilitating it through their alumni groups, probably under the table as to not break any rules.

Look, I am not an insider. But I have access to enough intel to tell you that UGA is going about this in a very conservative way because we can afford to do so. We've been getting more 5* than anyone not named Alabama for years now. We are putting players in the NFL at a very high rate. We don't have to go full ATM to get players to come to UGA.

They made a decision to dedicate the NIL to players who were at UGA and earned it. They aren't going to play the "pay to play" game, and when people say they are it's because you have blame something when you get beat out for a player. Think about it ... you can't be half in, half out on this. If you tell one kid you aren't paying, but pay another, that will get out - right? There is no way to keep that from happening. So they tell them if you come here the mimimum someone is getting is $X, and we have players getting on average $Y, and we have some players getting as much as $Z. We also had $100 million in NFL contracts last year.

I've said all along that it's form over substance to tell a kid that he can make $X v. pay a kid $X. You are still telling a kid they will get paid if they come to your school. One is just more palatable to people. I always thought it would take a few years for teams to get their pitch together to report what recruits could get if they came to a certain school. I didn't see schools like Miami, ATM and UTjr who were so desperate to win simply coming out and paying players before they got there. But, it happened, and we are now seeing it doesn't appear to be working. ATM's class from last year is falling apart. You just got a flip from an OL who got persuaded to go to Miami for $$$, but decided Auburn was a better fit for his education (he wants to be a pilot).

UGA has shown that developing a culture, with talent, is the way to go. I think you will see the more successful teams doing this which means they will get a lot of NIL for their players, but you have to come there and do something to make that happen.

Ohio State missed out on a top southern recruit to a SEC school. This happened tons of times before NIL. We will be fine.

Yea these "outside sources" are going to get tired of paying kids a bunch of money up front and them either not producing or hitting the poral within a couple of years.
