Now, I am not the smartest guy out there. I follow pretty much everything college football. It is my favorite sport, hobby, interest, etc. I know this expansion stuff is all money related. One thing that came to mind: what about away games? Where I live, I can be at UVA, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, and Duke in less than two hours. Virginia Tech in less than three hours. South Carolina and Clemson in about 4 hours. And when you go to these games, the away team has fans (sometimes quite a few) in the stands. What happens when Southern Cal has to play at Minnesota? Any Trojan fans gonna be there? Especially in November. Or UCLA has to play at Penn State. Or Rutgers at Southern Cal. Any thoughts?

I've been thinking about this and the only thing I can think of is that fans of some schools will just get fucked over.

To answer your question. B1G teams will travel to the Rose Bowl and USC for sure. UCLA can't even sell out homes games because they don't really care, so they won't travel. I don't know about USC, but they've always had a good amount of fans attend the ND games. My guess is they choose to go to games against PSU, OSU, Michigan, etc and not give a shit about the likes of MD, NW, Rutgers etc...

where do you live??

First 3-5 years I'm sure there will be a lot of travel. Once the novelty wears off there won't be much outside of teams that look like playoff contenders.

I am with @ericd7633 ... USC may travel to big games, but they won't go to the others. And like you said, that will wear off after a few years. UCLA won't travel at all.

The B1G schools will have people attending those games from out of town, but also those in SoCal. I would assume there are a fair number of people from the B1G schools - which are huge - living in SoCal.

UCLA may find themselves the minority at many of their games much like the Chargers in LA and the Raiders in LV.

I would think that both USC and UCLA have sizable alumni groups near most B1G sites. This may be the first time to see their team live in years.

True but USC fans kind of had the same problem in the Pac12. Cal and Stanford are about as far away as Syracuse is for Virginia Tech. Oregon and the Pac12 North teams are as far away as Wisconsin would be for Virginia Tech. Colorado and Utah are NOT close to USC either.

So USC had to travel a lot in Pac12. Pac12 is pretty geographically isolated.

I suspect a lot of this has to do with pockets of fans in different parts of the country. Lots of schools in the B10 have alumni living in NY and California. I expect the away games in California to be well attended by fans, just like we've seen with Rutgers games. I'm not sure about the reverse of that -- IE USC and UCLA alumni living in the midwest.

This. My Baylor brother in law was whining about how many BYU fans were in the stands for the game in Waco last year. Of course, I didn't help with his disposition when I said the Bear faithful should buy up all the tickets and not sell them to all those transplanted Utah LDS folks that live in DFW and the Austin/San Antonio area.

How would one know the difference?
I know a few LDS peeps, But they don't advertise it.
I could see not selling them to someone living in Utah.

Traveling to games a thousand miles plus away from where you live was always something people had to budget for and make other allowances to attend. With inflation ramping up the cost of everything and plane travel being a royal pain in the ass, there will always going to be a shortage of away fans when USC and UCLA play on the road. But the AD's don't give a hoot because the $$$ is all that counts.

You have a nice - if there is such a thing - casino coming your way.
Yeah, it hasn't interested me that much. I would lose every bet I placed. Some years ago (2010 I think), I bet on a college basketball game. UNC vs. College of Charleston. I bet against the spread. Not only did UNC not cover the spread, they lost straight up.

How much would time zone change affect the players? Southern Cal to Washington just "feels" a lot shorter than Southern Cal to Rutgers.

I go to Vegas every year to play poker. I always put $20 on the Dawgs to win. Because of Covid guess who didn’t go to Vegas in 2021? Yup, I’m that guy!
