Oklahoma fans ... this won't work in the SEC

Doesn't really matter. He can coach them up and they'll drop 70 pts on you if you're not lined up right

Yep. And then in the after game press conference he take the interview into some history lesson about the Rock of Gibraltar when asked about all their scoring.

Recruits don't pay attention to comments at media day, it is all about the direct, behind-the-scene, communication that we don't see.

Translation; " My job ams hard. Dont have high expectations of me, or my team"

Nailed it. You can tell he's under a lot of stress the way he flails his arms about like a crazy person. It's a tell-tale sign that he is feeling the heat. hahaha

Welcome to the show mutha fucka!

This is actually Dabo's credo ... once you commit to us, you are done. No more visits, you are done.

Question: does he stop recruiting players once they commit to others? Will he accept a flip? If that is the case that seems hypocritical.

You have to keep recruiting if for no other reason than you never know when they go into the transfer portal. Smart is incredible at not burning bridges.

Yep, for better or worse, with the transfer portal being a thing...you have to continue to recruit guys already on your team almost as much as you do guys you're trying to get to join your team.

OU was waaay down in the recruiting rankings two months ago and has now shot up to #6. He’s doing something right. Brent Venables is big on integrity and taking responsibility. So he is demanding commitment from people. Muleshoe is trying to build a program with a bunch of gunslingers. Jumbo Fisher is trying to win with mercenaries. Saban is still trying to crush everyone with raw talent. Every good HC develops his own angle. I’m anxious to see which approaches end up being the most successful in an era of NIL and the transfer portal.

It won't be Venables if he thinks he can get by with not having to continue to recruit players already on his roster.

Chris Peterson tried that shit at Washington before NIL and when the transfer portal wasn't as big as it is now...didn't work out so well.

Eh. I see people on message boards bitch continuously about what a commitment means these days. Now when a coach actually tries to reinforce what a commitment truly is, people try and criticize him for it.

Maybe. But it's also not reality based. Additionally, that commitment doesn't seem to always work both ways. If the NFL or a bigger program comes calling, most of these coaches forget all about their ''commitment''.

Horses out of the barm, water over the dam ... fact is that kids are playing a game. You can play it or not. Dabo, and now Venables, choose not to play it. We'll see how it turns out. Dabo has won nattys without having top classes year in and year out. Want to know what the difference is? The SEC ... that's where OU is going to have play. Not the ACC. And in the SEC you can be sure that Satan, Smart, Kelley, Dumbo, and the rest won't hesitate to go after Venables' recruits.

You don't understand what he's doing. Of course he still "recruits" those players who have committed. Nobody is saying he just farts them off. But he wants them committed and not taking more visits. See the difference? He doesn't want a Malachi Nelson type of situation. Nelson is a snake doing that to USC and Muleshoe. A real POS. You better not get your hopes too high that he will stick with you if the grass doesn't look greener on the other side of the fence. It's that kind of nonsense Venables is trying to avoid and his approach might just work.

I understand exactly what he's doing...it's the same shit Peterson tried at Washington and it's not going to work.

Nelson isn't doing anything that most coaches would do if the NFL or a bigger program came calling.

Kids understand the ''business'' of college football now and are treating it as such.

If Nelson leaves, that's his prerogative and I have no issue with him doing what he and his family think is best.

USC has lost players to the portal and USC has benefitted from getting players from the portal. It's how the game is played now.

If Venables thinks that stuff is going to work, OU is going to be Vanderbilt in the SEC.

Keep in mind that these players are 17-18 (imagine the decisions you made at that age) and it is like interviewing for a job. All of the time, you have people flaking out and not moving to a company or finding another landing spot. This is no different than trying to land someone for a job, it just happens to get a lot more attention.

Tennessee had some major players that fiddled with our souls this offseason only to commit somewhere else: Carnell Tate and Francis Mauigoa are two of them. They chose to go elsewhere (rumor has it Mauigoa got paid big-time to go to Miami while Carnell was from Chicago and preferred to stay closer to home). Who cares? Move on.

We ended up landing a decent 4-star replacements to both: Cameron Selden and Shamurad Umarov. Some say Sheldon might even be better than Carnell Tate and is a little underrated by the recruiting rankings.

Ultimately, it is all about development. You definitely cannot have sour grapes about missing prospects.

As for Venables, I don't take much stock into his comment. He was basically saying he wants people that are dedicated to winning at Oklahoma and not the prima Adonis. To me, that is just coach speak and really won't impact recruiting either way.

Sure looks that way nowadays….which is why coaches that can’t accept that reality may not last very long.

I think that is exactly why TCU parted ways with Coach Hit h ‘em up. (But Dykes ain’t no spring chicken either.)

All Venables is doing is introducing attempting to introduce a bit of integrity into football recruiting. Too much and it won't work for him. Too little and you have what we've got now: a clusterfuck that is ruining the sport. Venables isn't trying to be a saint; he's trying to minimize the confusion and second thoughts these kids have when choosing a place to play. It's admirable and it will be well received by some people. Some people will scoff and say he's being naive to think enforcing some allegiance is too much like Pollyanna. Let's see.

You have absolutely no clue about Washington if you think that is why Petersen left as HC. It was not his recruiting style that led him to resign. You probably already know that too. Yeah, and OU is going to drop to Vanderbilt's level. That's why OU's recruiting class is currently ranked #5/#6. Poor bastard doesn't stand a chance with his approach to getting kids to come to Oklahoma. We're doomed.

Oklahoma and USC definitely need to play each other. You can call it the Lincoln Riley bowl or Conference realignment\Conference killer game.

Just let us know when they've gotten good enough and we'd love to play them again.

Here's the problem ... who cares if they take visits elsewhere? If they want OU, they will be there. Smart tells his recruits to take their OVs ... it's 4 other free visits for the recruits' families ... flights, hotels, whined, and dined. You can see why they do it. And I get the "don't commit until after that" argument, but that's dumb ... go ahead a commit, and we are confident we will hold you. Flipping seems to happen a lot, but if you are a good school, with good coaches, you will keep more than you don't. In the meantime, UGA continues to recruit for that position.

Also, it allows the coaches to process players in good faith. We don't require that you maintain your commitment, we may call and tell you to look elsewhere. If Venables ever processes anyone or ever recruits a player committed elsewhere, he's a POS hypocrite.
