When I had my sub-contractor company, the defense contractor required me to randomly test my employees for drugs and alcohol. It was minimum twice a year for both. I always did the minimums because the cost of the testing came out of my pocket.

I obviously had to schedule the tests so I knew the exact date and time the testing company would show up. If it were for drugs (urinalysis) I'd tell the guys "You need to start studying for (fill in the date)" about two weeks prior to the urinalysis.
The reason is that I didn't give a damn what they did in their personal time as long as they weren't drunk/high on the job. A urinalysis doesn't tell me they are high on the job, just that they might have smoked weed in the last couple of weeks.

When it came to alcohol (breathalyzer) they were on their own. No hints and no warnings, because you're either under the influence or you're not at the time of the test.
