GAME Oklahoma vs Auburn

My thoughts on the DG situation...

He declared for the draft, didn't get the grade he liked, and wanted another year in college to try and improve. Coach Venables told him he was welcome back but would be competing for the starting QB job, it wasn't guaranteed. Oregon offered a solid NIL package and the starting job. It was an easy pick for him and there is no bad feeling towards him from most Sooners.

Also an interview Gabriel did in which he said he would earn more money in NIL than being an undrafted free agent.
Word I heard was that ou boosters committed a lot to JA, and that JA dad wasn't sticking around another season for his son to backup DG (JA apparently was always turning heads vs the 2s in practices)..

So they politely walked DG out the door and into the welcoming arms full of cash from Eugene. BTW DG was never going to go pro, he was always going to return to CFB, especially with how QBs with experience are wanted.

Arnold despite all the hype sucks but I can't put all of it on him.. I think Seth sucks as a OC.. sure he has experience but this was a comfort hire.. BV should have looked around and made an out of the box hire.

if I was an ou fan today.. I really would be questioning this whole staff.. It's not like Arnold turned out garbage overnight.. BB the OL coach.. what is his excuse for the OL room to be so thin? And before you say injuries, this guy has been there for years.. why did he have to go so hard in the portal picking up JAGS.. J A G S?? Sure he has a great track record with development.. But where are the bodies from previous classes? They ALL went to the NFL? Just saying..he should be feeling heat.. this is year 3 under the BV regime and good programs make the jump

People making fun of Mario.. but he's doing what is expected in year 3... Napier? he is doing everything NOT expected in year 3 lol

TL,DR: ou couldn't afford DG and make JA happy at the same time

Hawkins should look really good this week cause Auburn is bad.. my apologies @Wild Turkey

Fire the S & C coach too
nah they love schmiittttyy too much to do that

But these injuries aren't just random.. I think BV let the offense get beat up during fall camp while the defense was fine because they were deeper than the offense

or you can blame the grass on the field?

By my count OU has taken 7 OL out of the portal the last 2 years. That is a blinking neon sign that recruiting/develop has been a major issue and the coaches are aware of it

Been playing catch up with the lack of defensive talent and OL attrition via nfl and nil.

Last hotshit OL shopped our NIL offer after his frosh season last year and bolted to Mizzou.

We got issues lol.

We have issues yes, but I’ll take what we have now over not being able to stop air with Riley. Venables will figure it out. I have yet to see him dodge a question or issue, that’s one thing I really like about him.

It’s not a good sign. The number 1 worry with hiring a HC is an over focus on his side of the ball. That is what has stopped Lincoln from becoming a great HC. OU got Venables in to fix the defense with the idea the offense would be maintained or slightly degraded. He has improved the defense, but nuked the offense. Essentially in the same spot with 1 excellent unit and a piss poor one. What made Stoops a good HC was his flexibility and thought process on the other side of the ball

Venables said today with his top 4 wide receivers out he's moving Jacoby Johnson from CB to WR. He's got no choice. Jacoby played high school in Mustang and was fantastic. He's a good kid and been to my house a couple times. I hope he does well. He will probably move back to defense if/when OU gets some players back.

Lincoln Riley nuked the offense as he was leaving. And of course the defense was already fubar. Venables will get it done.

so time to look towards the future with Hawkins for the remainder of the season? And if he is so-so.. attack the portal for a QB? Risk Hawkins to hit the portal as well? Back to another rebuilding offense in '25

I got news for you, with nil everyone is constantly rebuilding in one way or another. They will be signing another qb but Hawkins is a true freshman whose dad played for Stoops. Obviously the hope is he can get it done.

Oh also, Hawkins was offered by Bama and Georgia both.

Soooooooooooooo, you sayin' OU goes from a no defense Riley to a no offense Venables?

A high school kid that played both ways? Damn refreshing imo.

Watching Travis Hunter play Saturday night, I was wondering why some coaches aren't willing to try such. I know there aren't many with the talent Hunter has, but there are some that are still good enough to play both ways...at least some.

I'm old school and am bewildered when I watch some of the 5A-6A games here in the metroplex. These coaches refuse to play some of their most talented players both ways. I always thought you were supposed to put your best players on the field. Guess that's just passe nowadays. Spot rest them if need be. But damn, put them on the field.
