So as the 2021 coaching carousel continues, many are now discussing who will be the next head football coach of the Oregon Ducks. One of the names out there and possible leading candidate is former Oregon Duck head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly is currently the head coach of the UCLA Bruins where he is under contract for one more year, but his buyout drops from 9 million dollars to zero after January 15, 2022. Even though Chip Kelly inherited a tough situation at UCLA and a team with little talent, he has slowly built them into a competitive 8-4 team and currently has them in the Holiday Bowl. Sure these are not BCS level bowls that Chip Kelly took Oregon to in his four years in Eugene, but the program he inherited at Oregon was much different then the one he inherited in L.A.

With not having the immediate success Kelly had in Eugene, many have questioned whether or not he is still a successful football coach, but they obviously are blind to exactly what Kelly inherited at UCLA. Kelly has had to build the Bruin football program, as opposed to being handed a stable talented team. Kelly's seat at UCLA got a little warm mid-season because it seemed the Bruins were heading toward another subpar season, but Kelly turned things around and now have UCLA at 8-4 and going to the Holiday bowl and ending the season with some solid wins. Yet, UCLA has not extended Kelly's contract, leaving him still with only one more year left. All signs point to UCLA likely will not retain Kelly after next year.

Chip Kelly is 58 years old. Although Kelly could still potentially have at least 10 years left of solid coaching, he may be looking at a decision soon. Kelly is a very competitive guy and as with any coach, his ultimate goal would be to win a national championship. Depending on how much longer Kelly wants to coach, he has to look at what is the best path to obtain that national title?

Does he see it staying in UCLA? Where there may soon be a resurgence at USC? Even if he chooses to stay at UCLA, is he banking that UCLA will offer him an extension and he can stay there longer then just after next season? Say he does get that extension, does he see that he can win a national title at UCLA within the next 4-5 years?

Or does Kelly find what Oregon has in place the best possible route to obtaining a national title? Does Kelly look at the Oregon roster and what it will be starting next year and the next two years and see talent from top to bottom that is capable of winning a national title? We have been told Kelly doesn't like to recruit, but if he comes to Oregon for just 2-3 years with the sole goal to take over coaching duties and to win a national title, he wouldn't need to recruit.

Does the U of O see what is on this roster and know Kelly is the guy who could come in and inherit the talent and get the Ducks onto the mountain top? See's that in the next 2-3 years the Ducks raising the National Championship trophy? Go all in for the next 2-3 years with this current roster, incoming roster and Kelly as head coach?

Kelly could achieve the national championship at Oregon with the Ducks current talent. Does he want to come to Eugene and stay for 2-3 years to achieve that goal and then ride off into the sunset into retirement? Ending his coaching career with two stints at Oregon, with one being for 4 years where he took the Ducks to a National Championship game and four straight BCS Bowl games, only to leave and come back and finally bring a national championship to Oregon.

Oregon is sitting at the college football poker table with a heavy hand. Are they going to put all their chips in?

Is Oregon willing to put up the cash the bring in Chip? Seems like they are being cheap with coaches constantly jumping ship.

Well given that after January 15th Chip's buyout is zero, I would say Oregon definitely has the money to bring him back. I think they would too. This talent, with Chip Kelly is instant national title conversation and would be for the next 2-3 years. Cristobal even said it himself on an exit interview he gave to a local radio show. The talent is there and it's there for the next 2-3 years.

If I am Oregon I go all in on these next 3 years and I pay what needs to be paid.

Having the cash and willing to spend the cash are two VERY different things

You think Oregon’s worst years are national title conversations. And him sucking some local radio show’s cock to play nice on his way out is meaningless.

What’s he gonna say? “yeah, we really set you fuckers up to suck the coming years, hahahahaha!”

If you really think Oregon is going to wait until after the signing period to get a guy just to save 9m, you are a small fish in a big pond.

Lose all those recruits for a pocket full of cash?

That's dumb. Why do you think those are set to expire in Jan? Think man.

Can't see them not having a coach named before the end of this week. Clock is ticking on this recruiting class.
