Outside of top recruiting schools, why recruit unproven high school players?

Why not recruit the few that are seriously interested and go for good players in the transfer portal?

It’s pretty much headed that direction.

Before this becomes the only way, you will need to see someone succeed with it. Getting cast-offs from the better teams, players with issues, is not the way to develop a winning culture. Colorado will be an interesting case to follow this year. Replacing 90% of the roster ... they will be better than last year, but it would be impossible not to be.

Yep. Basically, Lovie tried that Illinois and failed miserably.

Since so many guys are coming in from so many different schools I do hope that most of their credits will transfer so that they don't get behind in their academic schedule

I'm not saying stop recruiting. Get the good recruits that you think will stick around and fit around transfers. Still got to be a good coach even with the good team.

LSU WBB did it and won a NC. And they already picked up one of the nation's top players this off-season.

Now, I know having a roster of 5 starters is more affecting than 22 (not counting ST), but then again, there are more players in football transfer portal.

It's 15 v. 85+ ... again, until someone shows it can be done, I am going to assume it can't. So far, no one has come close to teams that recruit HS well, and have great team culture.

If you aren't one of the "biggies" that can land mostly 4* and 5* it will come down to answering the question of "Do we want to stick with a bunch of 3* players hoping we find enough diamonds in the rough to compete against the aforementioned teams? Or do I go get former 4* and 5* players from the portal that aren't cutting it at the biggies, have had off field troubles, etc?

Basketball is almost there and part of their reason it sucks now.. You are not getting top DL without recruiting. You can grab quality skill positions, but you need to recruit the big uglies

All I feeling like doing these days is sitting back and see what 'sticks' and what 'doesn't' with this new CFB "normal"... Me thinks it's gonna get even uglier! :rolleyes2:

Because the teams that win consistently recruit well and fill holes through the portal?

I mean, UGA added zero players through the portal last season, lost 15 players to the NFL draft and still repeated as champions. They did it because they recruit and develop.

Recruiting and developing will always be key to success.

The problem is, the "good schools" are also doing this. So the smaller schools are fighting the same battle for recruiting transfers now as they are for high school recruits.

we'll see how that goes over the next couple years.

What is going to happen over the next couple of years that will make recruiting and development less important? To me the thing that counts the most is building a great culture. We've seen that at UGA and Bama, tOSU and Clemson. Again, we have that bowl loss to you guys to thank for our current culture. Smart changed his ways after that game.

i think UGA will start to hit the portal.. because teams will begin to poach players that aren't patient enough to stick around before they can declare for the draft.

We used the portal this year and used it before last season. Relying on the portal to build your team isn’t gonna work, but the portal should absolutely be used to stop gap needs

it's not about relying on the portal.. it's knowing that you will need to supplement it because players will be taking off.. doesn't matter if they are mercenary headcases like Bear or players who want to return closer to home like AD Mitchell

UGA added two receivers via the portal and a DB this year. They’re really deep on the D-line, even without Bear.

WR and DB were the areas of need and were addressed

I never said we won't use the portal ... we ain't Dabo. We didn't last year, because we didn't need to. Smart would prefer to build organically if he can. We did take 3 this year - 2 WRs (Mizzou and MissSt), and 1 DB (ATM). We lost about 10 to the portal, AD Mitchel being the most significant (hence us taking 2 out of the portal). Bear Alexander seems to be a mutual thing - he's talented, but a pain in the ass.

When you recruit at our level, you expect to lose those who can't get on the field. It's the way it is.
