All hopes are on USC now.
 
PAC is 1-8 vs the SEC in openers and 7 of those PAC teams were ranked.
 
But we need automatic qualifiers in the expanded playoff… :tsk:

Didn't mean that they would make the playoffs, but at 1-0 and ranked they are the Pac12 only shot.
 
They really aren't.

Utah's loss wasn't that bad. On the road and only favored by 2.5 points, add to that they almost won by a stupid throw at the end finished the game.

In a crazy world, if Utah goes undefeated, I think they have an outside, but possible, chance of making it.

Don't think it'll happen, but the Utes loss today in Gainsville is NOT a bad loss.

Florida is unranked and Utah was 7.

It’s a bad loss.

Utah is going to need a quality win to overcome this, but it is early so could happen. Will need USC to stay highly ranked and Oregon to somehow get back in the rankings.

Florida is likely ranked in the top 15 at the end of the season, and if Utah doesn't lose, it won't be a bad loss.

Again, highly unlikely, but come season end, we might see this isn't a bad loss, especially given the circumstances.

Yep. The new format will take the top SIX conf winners automatically. That means even after USC/UCLA leaves, if everyone else stays one of the Pac10 will basically be guaranteed a slot. It's kind of dumb.

But only the top 4 conf winners get a bye, right? So they may get in but won't likely stay for long.

You have to be very good or very lucky to even get in now, even if you aren't up to the others in the field.

It's going to be trivial to get in. The tallest midget goes up.

And I didn't read the full thing, is it automatically the top 4 conf winners, or the highest 4 ranked of the 12 teams selected? Or do they know that?

It‘s really the only way that passed. Since the vote needed to be unanimous, thats the only way the PAC and B12 reps would vote for expansion. Actually really smart of them.

Not sure, I heard but didn't look for myself that the top 4 conf winners get a bye. Sounded like you must win your conference to get a bye, which I'm cool with. Having been the 5th team a couple of seasons ago I'm good with expansion. The other leagues all have done it and having another baseball or NBA team make a 1 game play-in wildcard hasn't killed them too much.

I've been on record for years of not favoring expansion and I'm still of that opinion, but it doesn't matter as it's coming anyway.

That alone won't be enough to save the Pac 10 after USC/UCLA leaves because if any of the other majors invite UW, Oregon, Stanford, etc and offer a lot more money, they take that money 100% and not care about losing the much much easier road to a playoff. No chance Oregon wouldn't take 100m/yr knowing they probably never reach the playoffs again vs keeping it around the 30m or whatever more is added on the next deal and getting there semi-often.

Money is a much bigger factor now than it was before NIL.

Problem is, they were two of the 3 that had any kind of cred going into the season. It takes more than just being the best in the Pac to get into the 4.

USC for sure still has the ability to reach it. Problem for them is, they'd probably have to be perfect and end the season v a pretty solid ND team. It's a tough ask.
