I was going to put this in the larger Pac12 thread but figures it might need it own attention. This letter is one of the more pathetic things I've ever seen from someone at his level.

In a letter provided to the University of California Board of Regents ahead of a closed-door session Thursday to discuss UCLA's proposed move to the Big Ten conference, Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff detailed "significant concerns" he had with the move, including its effect on student-athlete mental health, increased travel and operational costs, and negative impacts on both Cal's revenue and the UC system's climate goals.

He said the increased revenue UCLA will receive would be completely offset by higher costs coming from added travel, the need for competitive salaries within the Big Ten and game guarantee expenses.

Beyond the financial component of the added travel, Kliavkoff said "published media research by the National Institutes of Health, studies conducted by the NCAA, and discussions with our own student-athlete leaders" show the move will have a negative impact on student-athletes' mental health and take away from their academic pursuits. He added that it would also be a burden for family and alumni to face cross-country trips to see UCLA's teams play.

Finally, Kliavkoff said added travel runs contrary to the UC system's climate goals and works against UCLA's commitment to "climate neutrality" by 2025.

So in his eyes UCLA shouldn't go because:
- It might hurt someones feelings
- It is bad for the Earth
- Pac12 doesn't pay as much as Big10
- Fans that already aren't driving 30 miles away would have a burden of traveling hundreds of miles away

:L

Pac-12 are such dummies

They should have taken that OU/Texas/Okie State/TTU package when they had chance. instead they turned it down b/c "muh academics"

ACC will face a similar fate. ACC had a shot at Penn State in 1991, but declined to invite them b/c "it would ruin ACC hoops", lololol

I just can't get over "the need for competitive salaries". How about being the boss and coming right out and admitting another conference takes better care of their schools than the Pac does.

I read it is "if they leave California and see how normal people live they might not come back".
Also, in the world of NIL sounds like a great argument for the NCAA/B10/Universities to be able to pay a certain amount of family travel expenses.

Wait
Travel costs will offset their increased revenue ??? so they won't make more money /

On one hand, this letter is stupid and an act of desperation.
On the other hand, this is bat shit crazy California so I would not be surprised in the slightest if they denied UCLA's move for climate reasons.

I wish I was joking but this is the state that one day mandated all electrical cars by 2030 and then the next day announced rolling power blackouts.

He makes some good points other than the climate bullshit. But here's the key issue: you could pay UCLA twice what any SEC team gets and they will still be in debt. It's the CA way of doing things. Governor Hair Gel and that state's leaders in the U.S. House and Senate all think money grows on trees. The state's population will shrink by about another 200,000 (tax paying citizens) next year due in large part because of their rampant desire to fund anything that's woke, edgy or avant-garde darling. The whole state is a bunch of ticks sucking off each other. USC makes enough of its own $$$ to fund its progressive agenda so what they do with their money is their business. But UCLA is a typical California mooch looking for money anywhere they can get it while spending like there's no tomorrow. George Kliavkoff is another Professor Harold Hill shilling a con game from town to town......except George Kliavkoff wears more expensive suits.

Eerily similar to the BigEast’s boneheaded moves (or lack of). Same thing with Penn State and letting basketball rule the roost a little too much (tho it WAS a good money maker back then) on down to letting Notre Dame use em like a desperate girlfriend.

They have a chance to end up with a decent product when it’s all said n done but it’s prob gonna be on par with the PAC and B12 as far as revenue.

Meh, Kliavkoff is just trying to save his conference (and his job) any way he can.

Dude gets hired to fix the conferences issues, gets started on that, then he gets a bomb dropped on him that his blue blood football school and blue blood basketball school are leaving and taking his biggest tv market with them.

USC is a private school, so there's nothing he can do about them. His only hope is to see if the UC Regents will try to remove as much of the financial incentive for UCLA as possible to get them to pull out and hope that USC decides not to move by themselves.

It appears to be akin to a "Hail Mary" (I've seen reports that put the chances of UCLA not going at 1%), but it's all he's got.

All of this is the result of Larry Scott's stupidity...Kliavkoff is just the guy who got tasked with trying to clean it up. It's looking like he just couldn't get it cleaned up quickly enough.

Really setting the bar low for considering the cities in the B1G a vacation.
You've obviously never been to scenic West Lafayette.

Yep!! That's what today's Cali is all about these days.

He should be talking to San Diego State and Boise State. Probably only two brands he can grab that would add any value right now. Maybe Nevada and UNLV as well.

Slim pickings for Pac12 left on the board.

You forgot the one about "ucla leaving hurts cal"..... :dhd:

Yep! I doubt USC really cares all that much whether UCLA actually goes with them. USC has wanted an excuse to get out of the PAC for awhile now. They were even thinking about possibly going independent at one time.

IF B1G want 2 teams they can probably find another one, easily. I could even see a new Oregon "scenario village" NOW rooting for UC Regents to somehow ban UCLA from moving to the B1G, thinking they would get that "invite". :heh:

Cali is one helluva soap opera these days...
