People Will Do Anything To Avoid Flying These Days

Why was he arrested? Sounds like Barney Fife had a power trip.

He was going to be taken in because the vessel wasn't registered. That's BS, IMO. If he was that far out, shouldn't he be in international waters?

But he was arrested because he threatened to kill himself and blow up a bomb (that didn't really exist).
The vessel is unsafe and the guy obviously has some mental issues so the Coast Guard really doesn't have a choice they have to bring him in and site him for having an unregistered vessel in the process.

The Coast Guard did the right thing.

Those comfy smart cities I keep hearing about where everything I need is a brisk 15 min walk away can’t get here fast enough.
Sounds too European for my liking.

Maybe by the letter of the law, they did the right thing. But personally I don't agree with the gov't protecting us from ourselves. As long as there is zero risk to others, and this one is as close to "zero risk to others" as you can get...leave him alone.

What was the worst case scenario? The guy doing it dies before reaching Europe or Africa?

Big Brother bullshit

Sounds like you've been bought and paid for by Big Coast Guard

Exactly, and if he does it again, they should be like Schultz

DANG, I thought those service academies paid for everything??
Well they do make the kids take out a 10K interest free loan that pays for their uniforms, laptops and such but the payment is taken out of their pay (they get a small salary while going to school).

They also get a 30K internet free loan when they graduate to help them get started. Mine took hers and invested it and had dad get her started. Fair deal for me saved me 130K in college costs.

This reminds me of that balloon boy story

So can he just register the fucking thing and then go on his merry fucking way?

Is this not how the "New World" was discovered? These pirates!

My son was allowed to leave the Coast Guard after they came under the Dept. of Homeland Security and decided to "diversify" all eligible white boys out the service with full bennies....

That is a shame too. Why force people who actually want to be there out? Bidenomics

like the Experimental Prototype City Of Tomorrow?

Consider it like this: once the Coast Guard knows about it, they at least share liability for any negative outcome of the guy. His craft sinks and he dies and then the gov't gets sued for $40 million. Individual gov't workers can't be sued, and it's assumed policy and authority structure are responsible. Those costs then are borne by the taxpayer.

Absolutely!

It's most likely just another of those laws on the books that 99% of the time is a warning and a "reason to stop and check" and then they can use if they want to fuck with you.
Revenue streams.
