Perseverance rover has successfully landed on Mars

HA! We can’t even stop the flu from shutting down the world but we’re going to Mars? Good luck!

It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment if you think about it.

Just wait until the climate changers start caring about it. Won’t be so cool when you have to wear an adult diaper because your beer farts are making Mars too warm.

Was watching the science channel last night. Pretty cool how they dropped the rover off using the disposable helicopter thingie.

And it still has to bust out of there somehow. We don't get to do much more than hit the take off button and hope after that.

Watching the white knuckle landing from the control room was interesting enough yesterday. How they actually landed on a planet with such a thin atmosphere, and the new ways in which they did it blew my mind.

The “landing with your eyes open” that they were finally able to do with the new ground sensing technology is fascinating. The crater they landed in would not have ever been tried in the past.

Space exploration requires racist math. Time to organize a protest.

I think I’m protested out for my lifetime. 4 years of MAGA took a lot of steam out of me. Centrist life is so much more liberating and care free.

Yeah, I'm going to want to look into how they plan on doing that.

“Pfft.... bullshit!!”

- @Bayou Tiger

I never questioned NASA sent things to other celestial bodies. They did that many times long before NASA claimed to send men 6 different times to the surface of the moon.

Send up something that is alive and get back with me with the results. Until then y'all don't know any more than I do if they actually sent men to the surface of the moon. Y'all saw a video feed from NASA that is all. Could be real....or could be fake.

So we're I guess going to get samples from Mars back to Earth in a decade or so?

Mark your calendars in 2031.

Kind of like we got samples from the Moon....turned out it was petrified wood.

Either NASA proved there were trees on the moon or they faked it all and used petrified wood as rock samples.

It’s 2021 and these are the best quality photos we get? Couldn’t have put someone’s doorbell camera on the front of that thing?
You could. But the pics would be even worse. The camera isn’t the problem. Carrying a signal holding the picture up to a relay and off to cover 128.28M miles, then hitting another relay satellite and down to ground will fuck with resolutions.

Camera technology is greatly better than signal transmission over such miles and through a few relays.

All that said....I’m expecting better pics to come once all is fully up and going. Or....this is the best we are getting now over bouncing a signal over the inner solar system.

Then I’d hope whenever that thing returns to earth it has about a million of high definition and high quality photos to look at

I don’t know any plans for photos coming back. But this thing isn’t ever coming back. The plan is for a future mission to land and pick up the rock and soil samples and take back off with it.

And that plan is audacious enough to me just for the rocks and soil. Of course, landing with ground radar on ship control and using a sky crane sounded audacious too.

This thing ain’t coming back!? So millions of dollars to send a piece of metal up into space.
Maybe once we pollute the ocean enough with our garbage we can start sending garbage and waste up into space.

The rock and soil samples it will deem of interest with study (microbes and other life....landing spot is considered an old lake bed) will be captured and held for another unit to come get. They will be brought back and studied better.

And if they don’t find proof of past life there they might just do the garbage dump there....provided they can get cost to lift and deliver it down by many orders of magnitude. I would hate to see what my waste disposal rates go up to with the what it costs now.

IMO waste of money. We get it, space is really far away, yes it’s a fascinating basically incomprehensible size, but I’ve never understood why we spend millions and millions and millions of dollars and time on trying to get some craft to the moon or some different orbit, when we have yet to cure cancer here. Money better spent in curing that then getting grainy photos on the moon or Mars.
