Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe now Hall of Fame eligible

Just kind of a phase associated with Shoeless!!!

Oh I know, I should have thought twice because I really didn't mean to drag you in like that! :thumb:

Makes one wonder how the Reds managed to hit a couple of run scoring triples to left field in the first two games of the 1919 World Series.
It says he played left and right that year. Any idea if he was actually playing left at the time?

In games 1 and 2 of the 1919 World Series? Yes, he was. I can find/post the boxscores, writeups of the games etc. if you'd like.

Players hit a lot of triples back then. "Wahoo" Sam Crawford had 312 career.

Oh sure. Parks were huge. But what percentage of Sam's triples do you think were hit to LF?

The Reds were second in the majors in triples that year. But the 7 that they hit is the World Series is still much higher than their season rate. And as I said, two to left field. And both were somewhat misplayed or casually played by Joe, this is well documented. I know it's a small sample, as I said it certainly doesn't prove anything for certain.

Gloves were small, training was inferior, the bats and balls were quite different.

Oh sure. But if you lope over in a relaxed manner to field a ball and then throw it in so casually that Eddie Collins will testify under oath that he was shocked and puzzled by your actions that might do it too. Can't say for sure, of course.

I should correct something, I said a couple of times that half of Joe's hits came in the two clean games but this is incorrect. He had 4 hits in those games and 8 hits in the other 6 games (I had 8 hits total in my head and never checked it). He batted 4 for 8 in games 6 & 7 and 8 for 24 in the other 6 games. Of note though are his splits with runners on base. He came to bat 7 times in the first 5 games with a man on base and managed just one hit but he went 9 for 11 with men on in the final three games. Once again I would say that this evidence is neither damning nor exonerating, just interesting.

No...It is well documented that he did not bet against his team.
Investigator thought he probably had though. Also, the team doesn’t necessarily have to lose for Rose to make money with his bets. The point is, Rose was in a position to change the end result of gameplay, and due to his prolific gambling, likely did so.

Rose and Jackson are God's. For y'all to project your human defects onto them is heresy.
