Not sure the authenticity, but I was told by my grandpa that M&M's were chosen by the military because the candy coated shell kept the chocolate from getting messy due to melting in heat.

It made sense.

When I went into basic training in the early 80s they gave us MCI's (a.k.a. C-rations) because they'd replaced them with MRE's and needed to clean out the C-ration inventory. LOL
