Like many products, A1 was probably made popular by the military to cover poor tasting meat for the soldiers.
M&M's were made popular by the military.

Not sure the authenticity, but I was told by my grandpa that M&M's were chosen by the military because the candy coated shell kept the chocolate from getting messy due to melting in heat.

It made sense.
