those 97-99 teams just collapsed at the end of the season. Ranked or not, those teams knew what Old Joe was going to throw at them and he couldn't win on talent alone like earlier in each of those seasons.

Off of memory I know they lost in East Lansing 2 of those years. One was bad (I think 97). One they came back from and almost tied it but I always forgave them because 2001 they came back and won and had a chance to be bowl eligible going into @Virginia. 99 Michigan I was at that game and they pissed it away. Up 10 with like 8 minutes left and lost. I don’t remember 98 but MSU was a home win. They should of lost in 97 to Minnesota, I was at that too. The Minny RB had like 2 late fumbles it was crazy.

So in short yeah they fell short but they still had good years there. 99 was very disappointing and tough.

2000-2004 were pretty bad for them (26-33) but 2005-2010 (Joepa last full season) weren't so bad (58-19)

One of my favorite games ever was 2000 vs Brees and Purdue. He had an awful game and the PSU offense that was generally stagnant moved the ball vs a few NFL’er’s pretty decently and some how they held on and won. But overall it as bad. They lost a game 6-4 to Iowa, like WTF???
