R.I.P Florida - St Pete

Beautiful Michigan ... except the snow (and the rare tornado). More fresh water than anywhere else in the world!!!

Shhh. Do you really want the coastal rabble moving to the Great Lakes?

There is very little “fresh” water left on the planet.

You couldn’t pay me to step foot in a lake. Too many things growing in them now.
The great lakes aren't just any boggy lake.

Unless you're by Ohio, most of them are crystal clear with almost nothing in them. Sandy beaches most places, up north it gets a bit rocky

When you put it that way....

I think one of the best things about most of the state coastline is that it hasn't been ruined like most of the ocean coastline in the country. Tiny beach towns are all over the state, and there's often miles of untouched beach around. Tiny cabins, not huge condos....a different experience for sure.

Looks like it might come ashore and hit Cancum.
Won't that slow it down ??

That’s just because of the invasive zebra mussels

Most models have it encountering wind shear before landfall. It should weaken. By how much and how fast it’s not known. But it could reach Cat 5 status before then.

It could be down to cat 2 or 3 at landfall.

But that would still drive an unbelievable amount of storm surge into Tampa Bay

It was like that before them, but it certainly sucks to have those little bastard shells everywhere now. They killed off the salmon fishing industry, which sucks. But now the lake trout are spiking with fewer salmon.

This. Environment weirdos are saying how warm the Great Lakes are getting but that’s because the zebra mussels have made it clearer so sunlight is getting to bigger depths.
Have people actually been saying that? because it's actually been pretty consistent (and cold most months lol)

I can see a lot of people moving away from the southeast USA. Colorado looks like the least impacted state for climate emergencies (except snow). Even here there's an earthquake risk - except all the earthquakes the last century haven't killed as many people as Helene.
Good.

I’ve seen a few articles noting that “global warming” is affecting lake temps. But local scientists say it’s the lake clarity has caused sunlight to get deeper.

Welp... It's a Cat 5 @ 175 mph right now, although it's expected to decrease to about 125 mph at landfall.

Either way... it's gonna suck for those in it's path.

My brother and sister-in-law live out that way. So much for a stress free retirement. He's keeping a close eye on it and may blow town tomorrow. The highways North are like parking lots so not much point right now.

Yep, last I looked, from around Ocala southward was like a 60 mile backup.

Hurricane Katrina was a Cat 5 while crossing the Gulf, it also weakened to a Cat 3 before landfall. What screwed up most of NOLA was a barge that had been tied off got loose and stuck a canal wall near the 9th ward and caused it to fail, flooding the low areas of the city. In the parish below NOLA, St. Bernard....the idiot in charge of the pumps turned them off and evacuated to a resort in west Texas while his parish flooded. Take away those two screwups and Hurricane Katrina would barely get a mention, as sure as George Bush hates black people.
