Hall of Fame knuckleballer Niekro dead at 81

ATLANTA -- Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro has died at the age of 81. Niekro passed away in his sleep on Saturday night. The suburban Atlanta resident had a longtime battle with cancer. Niekro was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1997. The iconic knuckleballer collected 318 wins

Damn. His place on Lake Lanier was beautiful. Knuckler’s Cove. Chatted with him a few times on the lake, always seemed like a good guy.

Pitched before my time, but he and Hank are the only reasons anyone knew there was an MLB team in Atlanta for a while.

Had the Braves in a great place in the '82 playoff opener, but the good Lord dropped a bunch of rain down before the game was official. Whole postseason that year may have had a different result had that rain not come.
