R.I.P to the GREATEST HR HITTER OF ALL TIME. Hammerin Hank

Birdhouse closing in on GIGI territory.

Babe Ruth is the greatest player ever
Ted Williams is the greatest pure hitter ever
Hank and Bonds were two of the greatest homerun hitters of all-time but Ruth is still the best homerun hitter of all-time as well. I mean Bonds was as close as it gets to what we see in comparison to Ruth though, he was a monster.

Babe 11.76 AB per HR
Bonds 12.92 per HR
Aaron 16.38 per HR

That works to an extent, but also, you have to consider the quality of said competition.

A large percentage of 300 game winners come from guys that played in 1800s and the dead ball era where pitchers started 50+ games a year and threw complete games. Cy Young has more complete games than Greg Maddux has starts.

12 of the 24 players with 300+ wins have played since 1947.

Quality of competition is not an argument that I put much stock in, players shouldn't be penalized because of when they played. I'll take Mel Ott over any right fielder in today's game.

You might not put much stock in it, but it should be considered IMO. I mean, during Ruth's era, a lot of players had to work jobs in the offseason. It's all a matter of preference, but when the numbers are close, I'm gonna give the nod to the more modern player every time.

The first part of what you said supports my position. The fact that players today can just concentrate on baseball gives them a huge advantage.

Babe was one of the ones that was paid enough to just focus on baseball, his competition for the most part wasn't. It's a muddy era. It's impossible to truly quantify, so it comes down to preference and opinion.

Sad news about Hank, but he was not the greatest HR hitter of all time. That distinction belongs to Babe Ruth.
Aaron had more career home runs than the Babe did.

And there were players that werent white.
Tom Cruise What GIF

Damn what a legend. Unlike these clowns today he faced Real Racism and never blinked or wavered. Hell of a man and hell of a player RIP

Babe Ruth was also one heck of a pitcher...

fwiw, Babe Ruth played 16 exhibition games against negro league teams and he absolutely dominated them

AB - 55
1B - 11
2B - 2
3B - 0
HR - 12
BA - .455
SA - 1.145

I love Babe Ruth but the stats mean next to nothing ... both leagues were watered down by bigotry, and they was exhibition games.
