Riley’s offseason departure from Norman, coming off a much-anticipated agreement for Oklahoma to join the SEC in 2025, prompted talks on whether the coaching protégé dodged college football’s stiffest conference by moving to USC / Pac-12.

“I heard the whole SEC narrative,” Riley said in an interview with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, denying any apprehension over the eventual exodus out of the Big 12 for Oklahoma.

Riley chalked the move to forgo the SEC and head to LA to a strong offer by the Trojans.

“To me, the SEC has nothing to do with it. It’s all about the program that you’re at and the position you think you can get to.”

He admitted that his personnel back in OU wasn’t capable of getting the job done.

“I’ve walked into four playoffs, and I’ve never had better than maybe the third-best roster [of the four semifinal teams],” Riley admitted.

Basically, Oklahoma can't attract talent per Riley.

Gee
I wonder who was responsible for all of that ???
And why did it take you 2 years to do anything about the Defense Lincoln ??

I mean, WTF is he going to say about it.

You can sum up his comments like this:

"USC paid me more"

With what USC offered, most people would have jumped ship. Whether USC overpaid or not is still to be seen.

LMAO I've tried to explain how soft Muleshoe is. He's a smart guy, talented and definitely knows his offense but he is weak as a kitten when it comes to putting together an entire team. Try to imagine you're in a playoff game with three 1st team All-Americans on offense and you decide to try a field goal on 4th and short inside the other team's 10 yard line in overtime. And the college kicker fucks it up as usual. Then the other team is suddenly off the hook and scores in two plays to win the game. Oh, and your QB was the Heisman winner. That's the day I knew what this cat was all about and I waited a few years to be proved wrong. I wasn't. Muleshoe wanted no part of the SEC. None. Nada. Zip. Playing in the SEC every week would have exposed him for what he is. He'll do fine in the PAC because he will have a situation similar to what he had in the Big XII.

So the guy who can hire his staff and recruit the players he wants blames the staff and the poor recruitment of players for why he left? Can't believe USC is happy to hear these comments.

no he wont. he doesnt have the ready made team
its gonna be chip kelly 2.0
the situation he walked into at Oregon was good to go keep it moving and he did. the situation at UCLA was not. rebuild
Oklahoma was good to go. USC is not.
he should be able to rebuild better at USC than Kelly did at UCLA but thats only if he is actually capable of doing so.

I am going to say this and probably piss some people off but the one positive advantage Riley has at USC is that the Pac12 South and league in general is really not that strong right now. Oregon is going through coaching change. Stanford is in decline. The Arizona schools never live up to expectations. Washington is down. Wazzau is down. Oregon State is trash.

Utah and UCLA seem like the big contenders right now. USC has that name recognition to recruit and has a league that really isn't that good RIGHT now so there is a great opportunity to come in and win right away, more so than a rebuild at another school like Nebraska, Tennessee, etc. that has a schedule with teams that are in better shape.

Chip Kelly had it tougher because when he first came to UCLA, the Pac12 was in a stronger position with Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Utah, and USC all seemingly in healthy situations.

part of is not the same as in charge of.

part of is not the same as in charge of.
he was in charge of teams that made the CFP even the season after Stoops retired. Riley isn't the best coach out there but he's certainly isn't the worst.... I think people try to compare him to Saban..when maybe he should be compared to Day

"Pac 12 is really not that strong" then why did they only win 4 games last year? 3 in conference? 2 in the south?
Oregon is going through a coaching change do you really expect a drop off though?
stanford over the last couple seasons 9 wins to 3 under shaw "in decline" but Oregon state 2 wins up to 7 under smith "is trash"
arizona schools never live up to expectations Arizona state won 8 games ( after all this off season stuff tho yes AZ st will probably struggle)
wazzu is down won 7 games amid a mid season coaching change

maybe, maybe not.
again we still dont know what he will do when he has to build up and run vs taking over. there are a lot of coaches who could have done what he did who struggled elsewhere.
